MARCH 2016 FAVORITES

Hey guys! It’s time for another monthly favorites post!
(Man, oh man, that was lame! I’ll work on a better intro!)

Anywhoo…I know I said it seemed like February flew by (it’s a short month, so yeah…) but this month is like, dragging it’s ass! Maybe because Mother Nature teased us with spring weather, and now it’s a balmy like, 48 degrees the day before Easter. No really, I took a screenshot – I’m not kidding.

I was totally getting into the ‘swing of spring’ and playing with spring colors and then it got cold again. Such is my life.
So while I’m inside, freezing my ass off, and taking a break from stuffing Easter eggs for my son, I was thinking of all the things I’ve been loving this month, and wanted to share them with you!

Let’s get started!

IT COSMETICS BYE BYE PORES SILK HD ANTI-AGING MICRO POWDER ($24)

img_0914I feel like it’s too soon to put this in a monthly favorites because I haven’t even had it an entire month yet, but I am so in love with this powder! I just picked this up a couple weeks ago on the first day of ULTA’s ’21 Days of Beauty Steals’, which means I only paid $12 for it, and let me tell you, I would absolutely pay full price for this product. It’s amazeballs!! It’s a very finely milled setting powder that contains a host of anti-aging ingredients and blurs fine lines and pores. I’ve worn this over a full face of makeup, and today I wore it over a tiny bit of concealer and nothing else, and either way, it makes my skin look incredible! I highly, highly recommend this product!!

MAKEUP GEEK EYESHADOWS ($6/ea)

Another obsession to say the least! I can’t stop using these! They’re so buttery and pigmented and have beautiful finishes and….ahhhh! I love them! Marlena certainly knows what she’s doing!! I’ll be doing a post soon with all my favorite single eyeshadows, and let’s just say there is definitely a majority in Makeup Geek! You guys should really check them out if you haven’t already!! Some go-to’s are Peach Smoothie, Creme Brûlée, Beaches and Cream, and Mirage.

MAKEUP FOREVER MIST & FIX SETTING SPRAY ($30)

I actually ordered the travel size, sample size….the tiny one, for the sake of trying it out. And as a setting spray, it’s alright, but what I really like using it for is misting on my brush before buffing out my foundation, or even spraying on an eyeshadow brush to make the shadow really pop! It helps to give decent staying power, which I appreciate. To actually set my makeup as a whole, like I said, it’s ok. I think it irritates my skin in that manner, but when used how one would use say, a MAC Fix+ to dampen their brush, it works really well! And since I’m not spraying it like, six to eight times to cover my face, one quick spritz on the brush is making the bottle last a really long time!

MAYBELLINE PUMPED UP! COLOSSAL VOLUME MASCARA ($8)

img_9602I finally replaced my old, dried up one! When I de-cluttered my mascaras (click here to read that post) I mentioned keeping the old tube of basically nothing to remind me to buy a new one because I love it so much. Then I caught it on sale, and bought two! What I really love about this mascara is not only the length and volume it gives to my lashes, but the regular, washable, non-waterproof formula has the staying power of a waterproof formula! It doesn’t flake, and it doesn’t smudge under my bottom lashes like most mascaras do to me. But for something so solid, when I get it all over my eyes (like we all can tend to do) because well, the brush is gigantic and I can’t apply mascara like a grown woman, it’s super easy to flake off with a Q-tip once it’s dry! You’d never know it was there!

BLOOMING LASH COLLECTION BY KISS ($4)

I found a bunch of these on clearance at my local Walgreens about a month ago, and I have been wearing them non-stop! It doesn’t look like they’re being discontinued, because I still see them on the display for regular price, but hey, who am I to turn down a discount?!
These lashes boast a “multi-layer technology”, which if you look at them sideways, the lash hairs (fibers, whatever they are) are not all in line with each other; some are higher, some are lower, some run a straight line down the middle. Varying lengths and criss-crossing makes this incredibly natural looking, and they have a nearly invisible band that makes them almost undetectable, which I appreciate because I don’t always like to wear a dramatic liner when I wear falsies. Some of my favorite styles are Daisy, Tulip, and Camellia (how cute is it that they’re all named after flowers?). I die!

MAKEUP GEEK CONTOUR POWDERS ($10)

img_0528I think this was my very first Makeup Geek purchase; actually, almost as soon as they launched I was committing my credit card to them – and I’ve hardly used anything else to contour with since! There are eight shades, broken into warm and cool skin tones, ranging from porcelain to deep, and they are without a doubt amazing!!! Creamy, pigmented, insanely blendable; ya know, all the qualities of a great product, and what you’d expect from Makeup Geek as a brand. I have two of the eight shades; Infidelity and Breakup (cool porcelain and cool fair) because I prefer a cool-toned contour shade, however I plan to add more to my collection for the purposes of freelancing. They’re even sold in a bundle of all eight shades for $65, which is a steal!

REVIEW – IT COSMETICS BYE BYE PORES

When you’re a seasonally (or year-round) oily gal like me, you need a good translucent, loose powder in your collection.

Hell, everyone should have one.

For setting, baking, blending, what have you; you need a good powder. And for a long time I relied on my Mary Kay Translucent Loose Powder (which I still love!) but when I got a peek at ULTA’s ’21 Days of Beauty’ ad, I immediately spotted this:

The It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Silk HD Anti-Aging Micro-Powder ($24 regular retail, I paid $12). I was immediately drawn to the claims; seriously, like a freakin’ moth to a flame:

What is it : An award winning anti-aging, face finishing powder that delivers a face-perfecting airbrush effect. It absorbs oil and shine, and blurs away the look of pores, without settling into lines and wrinkles. It sets makeup and helps to diffuse the appearance of wrinkles and pores instantly.

Who is it for: Anyone who wants anti-aging benefits and wants to instantly blur away the look of pores and imperfections, diffuse the look of lines and wrinkles on the face, and achieve a more radiant looking, flawless and air-brushed looking complexion.

Why is it different: Developed with leading plastic surgeons, and using anti-aging ingredients including hydrolyzed collagen, and vitamins A, C, E & K, this award-winning micro-finishing powder helps treat skin with anti-aging benefits and give a more youthful radiance while blurring away the look of imperfections. Translucent and colorless. Formulated without talc, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate mineral oil, petrolatum, synthetic fragrance, and phthalates.

Did you know that once you hit 25, you’re considered to have mature skin?! Dude….I’m 29….and a half…..oy.

Let’s get started!

PACKAGING

When you open the small, matte black box with the product name printed on the outside, you find your typical small, round container with a twist-off top. Inside is a sticker over the sifter, traditional of loose powders. The top is black, the pan itself is a slightly opaque, white plastic. It does come with one of those little powder puff things, but I tossed it. I prefer to apply this with a brush.

FORMULA

This translucent powder actually appears to have the palest yellow hue, however it doesn’t show on the skin. It’s incredibly finely milled, probably the finest powder I’ve ever seen.

APPLICATION & WEAR

My favorite way to apply this, whether its over foundation, concealer, or on it’s own for a smoother appearance to my bare skin, is to tap a very small amount into the lid, and apply it with an e.l.f. Powder Brush (the flat-top one), pressing it into the skin before buffing it out.
One of the most notable qualities of this powder is that it doesn’t not cling to or accentuate any dryness on my combination skin. Almost every single powder I own grabs onto the dry patches around my nose or between my brows, and highlights it like a neon sign in a bar window. Not this one.
It blurs out my large pores; it doesn’t totally eradicate them, but it definitely makes them far less noticeable. It also glides over those pesky little lines under my eyes without settling into them and making them look like the Grand Canyon. Much appreciated.
I’ll be totally honest; now that I’ve had the opportunity to try this at 50% thanks to ULTA’s month-long sale, this is something I would totally pay full price for! It’s worth every penny!!

Overall Rating : 5/5

Considering I tend to steer clear of most powder products for fear of the Sahara-like finish they tend to leave behind, I’m very, very impressed with this particular powder! This is something that is totally worth the price tag!
ULTA’s ’21 Days of Beauty’ is a fantastic time to grab some of your high-end lusts at almost drugstore prices!

YOUR SKIN BUT BETTER – 2ND SKIN FOUNDATION ROUTINE

Back in January, I posted an article in which I tested the theory of mixing facial oils with foundation for a ‘second skin’ like finish – you can check it out here. This hack was discovered by Scott Barnes, who is a well known makeup artist to the stars, and popularized by Wayne Goss, a YouTuber who put it to the test for the world to see. And while it produces a lovely finish, I found that even though I tested it with several different foundations, it still looked like…well, foundation.

We all know that foundation is used to even out skin tone and create a balanced canvas in which to apply the rest of our makeup. But every woman wants her foundation to look like skin, not foundation.
I, myself, have been having a hell of a time with foundation in the last few months. I’ve gone from oily, to dry, to combination (currently), and I’ll be 30 this year, so I’m classified as having “mature skin”. And it’s starting to show.

So today, I finally decided to try a foundation tip that I’ve seen here and there on both YouTube and other various blogs on the internet. The idea is to mix your primer and foundation together, kind of like a little foundation cocktail, and then apply it to your skin.

If you want to see what I used and how it worked, then just keep reading!

Start with clean, exfoliated, moisturized skin. No matter what combination of products you use, there no match for skin that isn’t properly prepped.
Because I’ve been getting oilier lately, my foundation of choice for this experiment was the Revlon ColorStay Liquid Makeup for combination/oily skin in the shade ‘Nude’. The primer I chose was L’Oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer, and here’s why – while I may be getting oilier by the day, I don’t like to look completely matte. I prefer a natural to dewy finish. If I’m too matte, it highlights every pore, fine line, and forehead wrinkle I’ve got. The foundation will control how much oil breaks through to the surface, while the glow of the primer will keep me looking radiant and healthy.

I poured about a nickel sized drop of foundation on the back of my hand, and one pump of the primer, and mixed them together with my finger. Then I dotted it on to my face, focusing more on the center, because that’s where I tend to get the most redness.

Whether you choose to use a brush or a sponge is up to you – I chose a Sigma F80 Flat Top Kabuki brush because I wanted a medium to full coverage; I have a few lingering breakouts from trying a new cleanser. If you’re someone who just wanted to even out a bit of redness, you could absolutely use a damp sponge, like the Beauty Blender or the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge.
To (presumably) add a little extra staying power, as well as aid in sheering out such a thick foundation, I first sprayed a little bit of Makeup Forever Mist & Fix Setting Spray on my brush before I stippled the foundation around my skin, and then began buffing in circular motions, making sure to get my hairline and down my neck for even blending.

Since this foundation is so high-coverage to begin with, and I had a little bit leftover on the back of my hand, I used it to cover up my under-eye area, as well as a bit of acne I’m trying to battle. Ordinarily, you wouldn’t want to use something luminizing on dark circles and blemishes, but this worked, worked well, and best of all – looked like I wasn’t wearing any makeup at all!!

From there, I added a touch of concealer to one particularly stubborn blemish, my brows, some mascara, some lip gloss, and the slightest touch of blush. I really wanted to test the longevity of the foundation cocktail without too much additional product on top to influence how it wore, and whether or not it would wear off.
I took my son grocery shopping, came home, played outside, and did a little yard work, in about 70 degree weather with minimal humidity, and it stayed absolutely flawless until I took it off, some 8 hours later. It didn’t break apart, it didn’t show a ridiculous amount of oil, and it didn’t slip and slide around on my face.

REVIEW – NYX ‘THE SKINNY’ MASCARA

After just getting rid of so many mascaras, I went and bought another one! I mean, that’s the point, right??!!

But this one….well, it serves a purpose, I swear.

I’m talking about NYX’s ‘The Skinny’ Mascara ($6.99/ULTA) ! Here’s what happened; I went into ULTA the other day to grab a brow pencil, and NYX is currently ‘buy one get one 50% off’ this month on all face and eye products. I’ve been grappling with purchasing this mascara because I had seen awhile back a video by Jessica Braun (Jambeauty89 on YouTube) in which she compared it to the IT Cosmetics Tightline Mascara, which is actually meant to be a mascara primer. I haven’t tried that one, so I can’t attest to how they compare, but I trust Jessica and her opinions 110%!

I absolutely hate tightlining my upper water line. I can do the bottom one, but something about the top just feels funky to me. This mascara is said to be perfect for that task, as well as getting every little bitty lash on the lower lash line.

Here’s what NYX has to say:

NYX Cosmetics ultra Skinny Mascara brush is perfect for coating every lash from root to tip – even along the bottom lash line! Finally, the smallest, thinnest lashes can get extra special attention too. The water resistant formula and micro brush work together to create long, beautifully defined lashes.

So how does it perform? Keep reading to find out!

PACKAGING

Unlike most of NYX’s (or other brands) mascaras, this skinny little tube comes in a box. I would venture to guess for ‘loss prevention’ purposes, as it’s pretty small and could be easy to pocket.
The tube itself is a shiny black finish with the product name printed on the side. Here’s what’s most different about this product, however; traditionally, the tube that houses the actual product is larger, which this one is exceptionally small, and the wand (the part that you hold when applying) is much longer.
The brush itself is no wider than the rest of the plastic tube that connects it to the inside of the cap. It barely looks like a mascara wand, but look closely and you’ll see perfectly spaced, super short bristles that are designed to grab every little hair, while at the same time depositing product right into the root of the lashes, creating that tightlined look, without the risky business of jabbing yourself in the eyeball with a pencil.
Neat, huh?

FORMULA

The formula is pretty thick, which I appreciate. You know how much I hate a watery mascara. To be fair, this is my very first NYX mascara purchase, so I’m not familiar with their formula or it’s variations from product to product (if any, that is) but if I had to compare it to something, I would say it has the consistency of a Covergirl LashBlast mascara, and you know I love that formula – not too wet, not too dry. Perfect.
Additionally, this claims to be water-resistant; I haven’t put it to the test just yet, and I usually steer clear of wearing mascara in ‘wet’ situation (pool, beach, etc) but I’m sure we’ll get a rainy day eventually.

APPLICATION & WEAR

So I doubt you’d be surprised to learn that the second I got home, I wiped off my eye makeup and tried this out. Seriously.
As with any mascara, I started at the root, and wiggled the wand back and forth between my lashes to deposit product for that ‘tightlined’ look. I’ll admit, I was worried that the bristles would be too short to grab my lashes and pull the product through the ends, and that I’d have to go back in with another mascara. Could you? Yes. Did I have to? No.
This would be ideal for those days that you want to lightly define the eyes, but don’t want to bother with excessive amounts of eyeliner and mascara. It grabbed the lashes nicely, and coated them with a thin layer of product, which resulted in darker, almost wispy, doll-like lashes, without looking overdone.
Now one thing I was curious about was whether or not this would layer well under another mascara – and it does, but you have to work quickly, as it dries rather fast. If your intentions are merely to tightline with this, you can layer something on top, however I wouldn’t recommend letting it dry between applications.
One more thing to note, is that typically ‘water-resistant’ formulas tend to flake on me, as do most drier consistency mascaras. This didn’t do that. It stayed right up on my lashes and lash line nicely, until I took it off. I do recommend removing this gently thought – I always use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup – because I worry that at water-resistant formulas are too drying. I can imagine this would work beautifully for brides!

Overall Rating : 5/5

If you’re in the market for a new mascara, and one that does double duty (or you’re like me and hate putting sharp pencils near your eyeball) then this mascara is a must-try! I definitely recommend it! And it actually makes me wanna try more NYX mascaras! I’m very impressed with the formula of this alone, so if the others are anything like this, I’ll be making another ULTA run in the very near future!

Have you guys tried this mascara yet? What about others by NYX? Leave me comments and recommendations below! I love to hear from you!

MAKEUP DE-CLUTTER WEEK #2 : BLUSH

 Hey guys!

It’s time for week #2 of my makeup de-clutter series, and this week I’m getting rid of….BLUSHES!

I honestly didn’t think I had that many, so when I was decided what to de-clutter next, I thought “ya know, I’m kinda tired this week, I’ll do something easy; like blushes maybe!”.

What. A. Tool. ‘Cuz this was harder than I thought.

In this series, I’ll walk you through what I’m keeping, what I’m tossing or giving away, and why – however, with things like mascara for example, if I’m not keeping them, they’re going in the trash, for very obvious, sanitary reasons.

So let’s get started!

MY BLUSH COLLECTION

So….clearly, I have too much blush. No one needs this much blush….but I like to have options, what can I say? However, I know that there are many that I just don’t reach for anymore.

Let’s see what I decided to toss!

Top Row:

Physician’s Formula Nude Wear Glowing Nude Blush in NaturalI actually really love this, and the packaging is adorable, but honestly, I never reach for it. So it’s time to pass it on.
Rimmel Match Perfection Blush in Light/MediumThat light pink shade on the right (which looks darker than it really is) makes the overall result too light, even on my fair skin. Out it goes.
L’Oreal Visible Lift Color Lift Blush in Peach Gold Lift  – This blush has noticeable shimmer in it, which only accentuates the large pores on my cheeks. Buh-bye!
Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Coffee CakeI had a bunch of these that I recently gave to my stepdaughter, but I kept this one because i like the shade. I just don’t use it. Time to pass it along.

Middle Row:

Physician’s Formula Argan Wear Ultra-Nourishing Argan Oil Blush in NaturalI really like this blush, but it always seems to get lost in my collection. Time to give it to someone who can really appreciate it.
Milani Baked Blush in CorallinaThe color is absolutely beautiful, but it’s got noticeable glitter in it, which frankly, drives me nuts. Gone.
Revlon Cream Blush in Pinched & FlushedI have four of these, however Pinched does nothing on my skin; it’s just too light. Flushed is a pretty fuchsia shade, but on my fair skin it’s not that flattering; it would look great on someone with light/medium to medium skin or deeper.

Bottow Row:

NYX Powder Blush in Peach & PinchedBoth absolutely beautiful, but I have similar shades in a blush palette that I’ll get to in a minute, and I just don’t see the need for loose compacts floating around my drawer.

Looking back, I probably should have tried harder to organize this into rows for the sake of explaining which is which, but these are labeled pretty damn clearly, so let’s talk about what I’m keeping!

Revlon Highlighting Palette in Rose GlowIs it a blush, or is it a highlight? I like to use this on days where I want the look of both, but don’t have the time. So pretty! And so similar to the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick!
L’Oreal Visible Lift Color Lift Blush in Nude LiftThis one has no visible shimmer in it, and it’s a pretty rosy/brown shade that is so wearable with minimal makeup or a full face!
Morphe Brushes 9B Blushed Blush PaletteThis is the palette that I was talking about; nine beautiful shades in both matte and shimmer finishes, and I love this for freelance work, because there’s literally something for everyone!
L’Oreal Visible Lift Blur Blush in Soft PeachThis has the most beautiful finish; very natural, no shimmer, blurs my pores ever so slightly, and the packaging makes it easy to toss in my bag for touch-ups throughout the day; no brushes required!
Revlon Cream Blush in Coral Reef & CharmedI kept these shades because they just seem so much more wearable on me. I love these under foundation, or on minimal makeup days when I just need that little bit of ‘oomph’!
Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso (top) & Berry Amore (bottom)Luminoso is a cult classic, so it goes without saying that I’m keeping this. Berry Amore is a berry shade with brown undertones and a touch of shimmer, but not overwhelmingly glittery shimmer, and I’d love to start using it more.
ULTA Sunkissed Blush/Highlight DuoThis actually came as a sample in a ‘gift with purchase’ bag last summer, and I am crazy in love with this shade. Its rosy and mauve-y and brown with a touch of shimmer, but it still looks very natural. The highlighter I could do without, as it’s more of a chalky white, glittery powder, but it’s alright on the eyes; literally, I don’t mind it as a shadow.
NYX Powder Blush in MochaThis is hardly a mocha shade; but it sure is pretty. Similar to Berry Amore, but totally matte. It stays.

TOSS TOTAL : 10
KEEP TOTAL : 10

I think that’s a decent result actually. Once again, this is another category that I didn’t realize I had so much of until I started going through it! I’m sure my friends will love digging through this stuff!

UPDATED SKIN CARE ROUTINE : SPRING/SUMMER 2016

If you’ve been riding with me for awhile here, you know my skin is….seasonally temperamental.

Sassy. It’s sassy.

In the winter, I’m dry as the Sahara. In the summer, I’m oily as can be. Spring and Fall are sort of my ‘transitional’ seasons with my skin. That’s when I become more combination. So naturally, I have to adjust my skin care routine to accommodate.

So I thought I would share my current skin care routine for combo, acne prone skin, in hopes that if you’re someone who’s struggling with keeping their skin clear and properly hydrated but not overly oily, you’ll be able to pick up some tips!

Let’s get started!

MAKEUP REMOVAL

Before I even think about cleansing my skin, I always remove as much makeup as I can with makeup remover wipes. Lately I’ve been using the Equate Beauty Night-Time Soothing Makeup Remover Towelettes to break down my foundation and concealer and any other face products.
To remove my eye makeup, I still use extra virgin coconut oil, and then remove all the gunky residue with another makeup remover wipe. The coconut oil breaks down any and all eye makeup, and conditions the lashes all at the same time, keeping them soft and strong.

CLEANSING

img_9413Since I’ve been oily and dry all at the same time, while still battling acne, I’ve set aside my regular acne cleanser, and upped my exfoliation game to daily. It’s really not recommended that you exfoliate daily, however I’ve found that it’s working well for me, as long as I do it gently. While in the morning, I only use a makeup remover wipe to wipe away any oil on my face from the overnight hours, each night, (especially if I’ve worn makeup that day) I’ve been using my Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Polishing Mask as a cleanser. Sugar is water soluble and a gentle enough exfoliant to remove the dead skin cells that clog your pores and contribute to breakouts, the charcoal helps to draw impurities like dirt and makeup out of your pores, and again, it’s not widely recommended to exfoliate daily, though it’s not nearly as harsh as broken shards of stone fruits in say, the St. Ives line of exfoliating cleansers.

MOISTURIZE & TREAT

This is where I try to moisturize and treat all at the same time. And this happens in one of two ways.
On days I’m not planning on wearing makeup, I apply my Vicco Turmeric Skin Cream with Sandalwood Oil immediately after cleansing/exfoliating (click the link to read a full review). Turmeric is great for fighting breakouts and fading old acne scars, and Sandalwood Oil helps to fight breakouts as well as regulate oil production on the skin. It has a slight yellow tint to it, which is fine on bare skin because it helps to balance any redness, but I’ve found that it just doesn’t work well under my makeup.
So for days that I do plan to wear makeup, I first moisturize with my Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream for Dry Skin, which is lightweight, hydrating, never greasy, and absorbs super fast! Over that, I then apply my Fruit of the Earth 100% Aloe Vera Gel, which also soothes redness, hydrates, controls oil, and is great for use during an active breakout as it helps to heal it, and makes a great primer for the skin before makeup. I especially like to use the aloe vera gel as a ‘primer for my primer’ if you will, creating a barrier between my skin and any chemicals I’m going to put on top of it that are in my makeup.

So there you have it! That’s my current skin care routine for the spring and summer months, for combination, acne prone skin. And it’s working rather well! Just see for yourself!

REVIEW – e.l.f. CREAM EYELINER

It’s like it happened in slow-mo….up in the air, and face down onto the floor. Cap missing. Dirty, totally unsalvageable.

I’m talking about my eyeliner. My trusty, ride or die Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner in Blackest Black. But let me back up a bit….

About two weeks ago, my little pot of liner hit the floor. The cap disappeared, and it managed to land upside down and end up with carpet fibers and dust inside of it, which despite my best efforts (and searching desperately for the cap to no avail) I couldn’t save it. And of course, it happened right in the middle of a tutorial. During a financially crappy week, at that.

So a few days later, after searching online reviews for another, slightly more affordable gel liner, I bit the bullet and bought the e.l.f. Cream Eyeliner, which retails for just $3 at my local CVS, as well as http://www.elfcosmetics.com.

Here’s what e.l.f. has to say:

The cream formula creates smooth lines that are defined and precise. Smudge-proof, budge-proof and water-resistant coverage for all day wear to combat against sweat, tears or rain! Achieve thin or bold lines with ease. Slanted Eyeliner Brush included.

So how did it do? Let’s find out!

PACKAGING

It comes in a small, square glass jar, with a square, black, plastic lid with the name of the product printed on top. While it did come with a brush, it was awfully tiny (short), and I immediately tossed it in the trash.

FORMULA

They aren’t kidding when they call it a cream eyeliner – it’s definitely creamy. However, being used to the stiffer, slightly drier consistency of the Maybelline product, I find this quite difficult to work with. It loads nicely onto an angled liner brush, but because it’s so creamy, I find that I have trouble controlling the brush. The liner I’m used to working with, because it’s far less creamy, seems to keep the brush hairs together better.

APPLICATION & WEAR

Alright, so I kind of gave it away by describing the formula. As I mentioned, I had a lot of trouble controlling this product. It also seems to take a few minutes to truly dry down and set in place, which can mean big time transferring issues if you have hooded eyes like I do.
Another thing I wasn’t crazy about was that, while in the pot it’s very, very black (which is nice), once you begin to trace it along the lash line, it kind of thins out and gets streaky. I found that I had apply at least three coats before it reached the opacity I wanted.
Once it finally sets, however, it does stay in place. For the hell of it, I drew a ‘wing’ on the back of my hand, and it stayed put with minimal fading for almost two days.
It might be ok for someone without hooded eyes, who wants to simply define the eyes. But when I tried to draw a nice, sharp wing, it was no where near as precise as I would have liked – and trying to sharpen it with a makeup wipe, Q-tip, or concealer was just a mess.

Overall Rating : 2.5/5

Honestly, I’ll probably pass this on to my sister, as she has big, round eyes and could probably use this with no trouble.
And lesson learned; next time I won’t be so frugal, and I’ll just buy the damn liner that I love!

Have any of you guys tried this product? What are your thoughts? Leave me a comment and let me know!

HOW I CLEAN MY FALSE LASHES

img_9661

So we all know that false lashes are probably one of the most incredible (and sometimes frustrating!), innovative, lovely additions to any makeup look. They take an average look above and beyond, and lend a lovely accompaniment to everything from a natural glam makeup look to the most badass smokey eye. And they come in a variety of styles, materials, and even colors to suit every occasion.

With that being said, sometimes they can be expensive. Ranging from synthetic fibers, to silk, to human hair, and even mink fur; there are literally lashes for everything! Personally, I can’t bring myself to spend $20+ on a pair of lashes, so I typically stick with my drugstore finds – KISS, Ardell, Salon Perfect, etc. And they’re awesome. And sometimes, I come across styles that are maybe discontinued, but that I just can’t part with after one or two uses.

So today I want to share with you how I keep my lashes in top condition just a little bit longer – if you want to know, then keep reading!

What you need :

  • a pair of used lashes
  • a bowl of warm, soapy water
  • Q-tips
  • paper towel
  • rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle

First, you wanna give your lashes a little spritz with the alcohol – however, I really only recommend doing this with synthetic lashes – if you spray alcohol on silk, mink, or human hair, you’ll likely damage them, as the alcohol is obviously very harsh and drying.

Place the lashes in a bowel of warm, soapy water. You only need a small drop of soap. Let the lashes soak for about 10 minutes.

When you remove the lashes from the water, pat them dry on the paper towel. Then gently pull off as much of the glue as you can. If the glue is especially resistant, you can try a little more alcohol on a Q-tip, or even a little oil-based makeup remover. That should break down the glue even further, making it much easier to remove almost, if not all, of the residual glue. After that, just place them back on the tray to reshape and dry. There may be a straggly hair or two, but those are easy to just snip off, and one or two won’t make a different in the appearance of the lashes.

One of the biggest things that I can’t possibly stress enough is to have patience!! It’s likely that you’ve used the lashes more than once or twice before trying to clean them, so removing all that glue is going to take some time. But it can be done!

If you look at the picture above, those are my Kiss Blooming Lashes in ‘Lily’, which came clean fairly easily, and reshaped nicely. However, the missing pair of Ardell Demi Wispies ended up in the trash because I had used them probably four to five times before attempting to clean them. They just didn’t hold up. But cleaning them after at least two uses, should get you roughly eight to ten wears before you have to toss them out. More expensive lashes can go upwards of 20 uses before having to be replaced.

I hope you guys found this post helpful! How do you clean your falsies? Do you try to clean them, or just replace them? Leave me a comment and let me know!

90’s INSPIRED MAKEUP LOOK

Ahh, the 90’s.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S., music still played on MTV, good music at that. It was a great decade.

I’ve been dying for the 90’s looks to come back – some may say I’m even a little stuck in/on the 90’s; I’ve always preferred brown/nude lips, smokey, messy, smudgy eyes, flannels. What can I say, I grew up in the 90’s!
Well this morning, while (albeit late) perusing some of the runway looks for NYFW, discovered that some 90’s trends are making a comeback; particularly the lived in liner, dark lips, etc. And then, my loves, I made a mad dash for my vanity and got to work!

If you want to see how I created my 90’s inspired makeup look (which is super easy to recreate, nonetheless, then just keep reading!

*NOTE* you already know, please forgive my atrocious vanity lighting – I’m working on it!

When it came to foundation in the 90’s, the overall goal was flawless and totally matte. No shimmer, no highlight, minimal blush, just matte and clean. If you want to see how I achieve the base of my face (ha ha) then click here for my update foundation routine.

For the eyes, I used all shadows from the Morphe 35N palette – again, all matte. No shimmer. I went ahead and numbered them for you, since the palettes don’t have shade names.

After priming my eyes with the Urban Decay Primer Potion, I picked up shade #1 on a Morphe M441 brush, and applied that from lid to brow bone. This will be our transition color. Then on a Morphe M330, which is a smaller, more tapered blending brush, I picked up shade #2, and applied that into my crease, from inner corner to outer corner, back and forth, in windshield wiper motions, and then went back with my M441 to blend out any harsh edges.

Now, using a Morphe M169 pencil brush, I picked up a mixture of shades #3 and #4, and applied that to the outer ‘V’ of the eye, and then gently blended it into the crease with the M330. Try to keep as much product as you can off the actual lid, because we want to keep that nice and light. Then go back in with shade #1 on a synthetic flat shader brush, and apply some of shade #1 from the inner corner, to about halfway across the lid, and gently blend the lighter and darker shades together.

Next, I used my Rimmel Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal Eyeliner in Black to create a messy line across my top lash line. It doesn’t have to be perfect, because now I’ll smudge it out with any angled liner brush; I used the Morphe M160 1/8. Moving to the lower lash line, I’ll apply the same pencil, but this time only to the outer third of the lower lash line. Then I’ll go back with shade #3 and my Morphe M169 brush, and blend out that black liner, so it looks more diffused, a bit softer, and more “I slept in this – so what??”. Then I applied a few generous coats of the L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Brown Black.

Next I filled in my brows as usual (click here for my brow tutorial), and then applied some Rimmel Natural Bronzer in Sun Light to the perimeter of my face with a Morphe M527 brush. Because I was feeling a bit too pale, even for the 90’s, I applied a little bit of ULTA Cheek Color in Sun Kissed using an angled blush brush. It’s the perfect muted, rosy brown blush for a look like this. And of course, what better way to complete this look than with Gerard Cosmetics Lipstick in 1995??!! I mean, come on!

There you have it! An easy, 90’s inspired makeup look! I mean, I could go real hardcore grunge and do a dark lip and heavily smudge liner that looks like I’ve been partying all weekend, but let’s be real; I was a freshman in high school in 1999. This is the kind of makeup I wore. Nothing crazy. If you guys want to see a 90’s grunge look, leave me a comment below!! I’ll totally do it for you!!

MAKEUP DE-CLUTTER WEEK #1 : MASCARA

Hey guys!

A few days ago, I asked you on Instagram (if you’re not following me there, you totally should be!) if you’d be interested in seeing a weekly de-clutter series.

The reason behind wanting to de-clutter my collection is essentially the same as anyone else; it’s getting a little out of control, there are old products that have expired, thing I didn’t like and set aside, and things that I’m just plain ‘ol not reaching for at all.

I figured today I would start with one of the larger areas of my collection; MASCARA!

In this series, I’ll walk you through what I’m keeping, what I’m tossing or giving away, and why – however, with things like mascara for example, if I’m not keeping them, they’re going in the trash, for very obvious, sanitary reasons.

So let’s get started!

 MY MASCARA COLLECTION

Ok, ok, I know what you must be thinking; “who the hell needs that much mascara!?”. Fair enough.
And you’re right, I don’t need it all. I’ve had a lot of these for quite some time, and many of them are well past their respective expiration date.
To be honest, this will probably be one of the harder categories for me, as I’ve had a love/hate relationship with most of these – but I narrowed it down and it’s way less than you may think!

WHAT I’M TOSSING

 Top Row:

CoverGirl Lash Blast Clump Crusher (one in Brown, one in Black) – basically it’s just old. I love it, but it’s old.
CoverGirl Lash Blast Length (one regular, one waterproof) – again, they’re old.
ULTA Legendary Lengths Mascara – this was in a ‘gift w. purchase’ bag, but I really didn’t like it.
Maybelline The Mega Plush Volum’ Express Mascara – I can’t stand the brush; it’s flexes, and the bristles are too far apart.
L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara – rather than a million lashes, it looked more like 4 or 5 real clumpy ones; not a fan.
Maybelline The Rocket Volum’ Express (Waterproof) – I bought this to dupe it against a high end brand, and I just really don’t like it at all.
Hard Candy Ginormous Lash Volumizing Mascara – this was pretty good, it’s just old.
Rimmel London Volume Accelerator Mascara – I found this on clearance, and I can’t stand the wand; it’s oddly tapered shape does nothing for me.
Rimmel London Wonderlash Mascara w. Argan Oil – this was actually pretty good; I liked how soft my lashes were. It’s just old and time for it to go.

Bottom Row:

Maybelline One by One Volum’ Express Mascara – this one flaked off of my lashes pretty heavily, so I just set it aside and forgot about it. Buh-bye!
CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume – loved it. It got old. That’s all.
CoverGirl Lash Blast Clump Crusher (see above)
Maybelline Illegal Lengths Mascara – something about this one irritated my eyes; fibers maybe? Does it have fibers? Anyway, gone!
Wet N’ Wild MegaLash Clinical Mascara – I actually really liked this; it came as a set with a lash serum, which I’m scraping the bottom of now. It just dried out and it’s old. I can’t keep it.
Rimmel London Lash Accelerator Endless Fibers Mascara – fibers. ‘Nuff said. It’s irritates me.
CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion – my first ever ‘Lash Blast’; I loved it, I recommend it, but it’s old.
CoverGirl Lash Blast Full Lash Bloom – I was back and forth with this one; my lashes were soft, but the brush was really scratchy and hurt my eyes. In any event, it’s old, and time to go.

WHAT I’M KEEPING

Left to Right :

Maybelline The Falsies Volum’ Express Mascara – I just love it. I love it.
L’Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara – I’ve literally never loved a lengthening mascara more.
Maybelline The Falsies Flared Volum’ Express Mascara – I actually bought this by mistake when I went to purchase the original ‘The Falsies’ and well…I don’t hate it!
CoverGirl Lash Blast Clump Crusher Extensions – this is fairly new, and I really am enjoying this mascara. I get amazing length and curl as well!
Maybelline Pumped Up! Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara – this is actually a dead tube; but I love it so much and it’s there to remind me to repurchase. It stays put for like, ever!
L’Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara – in the past, I wasn’t a fan; however lately I’ve been reaching for it more and more, and as long as I wipe off the brush, it’s fantastic!
L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara – I love, love, love this mascara! The primer lengthens and the mascara itself gives you the most beautiful, doll-like lashes ever! Try it!
Rimmel London Lash Accelerator Mascara – this will forever be a staple in my collection. I can’t confirm whether or not it actually makes my lashes grow, but it makes them look long and wispy, and it’s my fave to apply before false lashes because it doesn’t get in the way.
Maybelline Define-A-Lash Mascara – an oldie, but a goodie. If you’re looking for long, natural looking lashes that mimic expensive extensions, you’ll really like this.
Maybelline The Falsies Volum’ Express Mascara – yeah, I know. It came in a two-pack. What-evs. It’s that good.
L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara – “but you said fibers bother your eyes!” Yes. They do. But these stay on my lashes without flaking off, so it works for me. I definitely want to use this more!
Laura Geller Glam Lash Mascara (deluxe sample) – back when I reviewed this, I really wasn’t a fan. But I dropped a bit of saline solution into it, and it’s actually pretty decent! I think I just got an older batch.
Benefit They’re Real! Mascara (deluxe sample) – I actually received this sample for free at ULTA with a tear-out advertisement. It’s ok. I like the length (a little spidery looking though), I hate the brush (it hurts my eyes), and I love how it stays put all day long without budging at all!
Buxom Vanity Lash Mascara w. Big & Bushy Brush (deluxe sample) – this came in the Buxon Objects of Obsession kit (for Sephora VIB members) back around Christmas time and I really like it. I definitely plan to repurchase it when I’m done with the sample.

TOSS TOTAL: 18
KEEP TOTAL : 14

Well, guys, I think that’s a pretty successful first de-clutter session! I can’t believe I started with 32 mascaras!! Thirty-freakin’-two! That’s a lot of mascara!

I have to admit though, it’s a liberating feeling! I think that by the time I’m done de-cluttering everything, I’m going to feel pretty damn amazing!

Have you guys ever done a makeup de-clutter? What kind of things did you toss or keep? Have you tried any of these mascaras? Leave me a comment and let me know!
