HEAT-PROOF BEAUTY PRODUCTS THAT REALLY WORK!!

Ahh, summer.

Weddings, barbecues, beach days, boating…..all things that we want to look our best for. But let’s be real – that can be hard to do when you’re sweating from places you didn’t know could sweat. And your makeup is facing a meltdown of epic proportions.

Personally I don’t wear makeup at all in the summer. I’ll fill my brows in and throw on some tinted lip balm – that’s about all I can tolerate. I can literally FEEL it on my face. But maybe you’re getting hitched. Maybe you have an event to attend. Maybe you’re just one of those people that no matter what, wants to be glam everywhere you go – and that’s awesome!

So I’ve pulled together a list of my tried and true products that I can PROMISE you will help you beat the heat! Check it out!!

PRIMERS

Primers are a necessary item when trying to lock in a look and defend it against the summer temps. Realistically, there is very little you can do about facial sweating, but if you’re the type of person who gets oilier than normal when the mercury rises, a good mattifying primer will be your new best friend. This is especially important if you’re an artist and you have a summer wedding – all bridal meltdowns should be strictly emotional, not makeup related! Two of my favorites are the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($54, Sephora) and the Smashbox Photo Finish Light Primer ($36, ULTA). Both are oil free and not only mattify, but smooth the skin and fill in fine lines and pores as well, while still giving your foundation something to grip to. And as an added bonus, coming from someone who has super sensitive skin – these don’t irritate or break me out at all!

FOUNDATION

img_7727

Probably the hardest thing about summer makeup is finding a foundation that ticks all the boxes – good coverage, long wearing, budge-proof, doesn’t break apart, doesn’t feel or look cakey.

And yes, while the product itself is important, so is application. And knowing what’s IN your products helps too; for example, if you use a silicone primer and a water based foundation, it’s guaranteed that you’ll start to see the foundation break apart and slide around on the skin. Oil and water don’t mix – right? So keep an eye on the ingredients.

Also, regardless of what you pick, the key is to work in thin layers. The idea is to even out your skin tone and reduce redness. You can always go back and spot conceal as needed. The best way method of application I’ve found is a light layer with a brush, and then going over it with a damp beauty sponge – this technique picks up any excess product but also helps to press it into the skin, and mimic the skins texture leaving you with a barely detectable base!

Some of the summer foundations that are must haves for me, especially when I’m freelancing, are Lorac POREfection Foundation ($38, ULTA), L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation ($10.97, Walmart), Marc Jacobs Re(Marc)able Foundation ($56, Sephora), and Revlon ColorStay Whipped Creme Foundation (discontinued). The Revlon one in particular, if you can still find it anywhere, is AMAZING – it literally looks BETTER the longer you wear it!

CONCEALER & POWDER

img_7728

I’ve probably tried hundreds of concealers over the years – I’m not even exaggerating. And I’ve probably only been truly satisfied with a handful of them. Concealer is one of my desert island items – I need it to stay put, not oxidize, not crack, not settle, not cling to dryness. Most of the time, I’ll spot conceal where I need to and call it a day; like I said, I HATE feeling a full face of makeup in the summer. One of the concealers I’ve had the best luck with is the Ulta Full Coverage Liquid Concealer ($9, ULTA) – it’s got a pretty decent shade range with warm, cool, and neutral undertones, and good-for-skin ingredients like aloe, chamomile, and tea tree that help to heal as it conceals. Plus the wear time is pretty impressive – I’ve gotten a solid 9 hours without having to touch up. And while we’re on the topic, their color correctors are pretty great, too!

Some other great ones for long wear are the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer ($27, ULTA) and of course, MAC Pro Longwear Concealer ($25, maccosmetics.com). Though I’ll say this; there’s something in the Tarte one that breaks me out, and it DOES oxidize a little bit (plan to go 1 shade lighter if you’re trying to match your skin tone) but it’s SUPER matte and long wearing – it really takes a lot to get this concealer to budge!!

In terms of powders though, there are only 3 that have every really impressed me, and for different reasons. The Coty Airspun Loose Setting Powder ($5.97, Walmart) is great for baking on a budget – you get a lot of it for a little bit of dough (get it? Dough? Baking? OK, I’m done…), and since it’s SO inexpensive, it’s not one of those powders that you have a mini-stroke every time you look down and see all the product that just fell off your face. I hate baking with an expensive powder because I know that like, 95% of it is just going to get dusted away. But if you’re just looking to set your makeup in place, stay matte, and blur your pores to porcelain doll status, then iT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Loose Powder ($29, Sephora), or it’s drugstore cousin NYX HD Setting Powder ($5.79, Target), are the sh*t! With a brush or a damp sponge, they both apply like a dream, and I promise you you’ll never feel your skin so soft as with one of these little babies. Beware of the NYX one though, to make sure you very thoroughly dust off any excess – that one can flash back pretty viciously in photos!

BLUSHES, BRONZERS, & HIGHLIGHTS

Ok, so this is where things can get a little dicey – because these are usually some of the first things to break down and fade away on a hot day. I don’t know about you, but my face will literally EAT these products; they’re freshly applied and looking fabulous, and then 15 minutes later I look like someone finally unzipped the forgotten body bag – no bueno, yo. While your prep, base, and application are all still SUPER important, so are your products!

img_7730The Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-HR Blushes ($29, ULTA) are great for beating that mid-day fade. I know, I know, I said that Tarte products tend to break me out. Listen, sometimes you gotta take one for the team. Another great option are the Morphe Blush Palettes ($22, morphebrushes.com) – these things are CRAZY pigmented! And they last! I remember when I first bought my 9B palette, and I was in love. But then, they dropped the 9N palette….a little more natural in terms of shades and finishes, and probably my favorite of the two. Hell, at that price, buy them both!

Bronzers and I tend to have a love/hate relationship. I like a neutral bronzer. Something not too matte but DEFINITELY not shimmery. And it was always a struggle to find the right one. But some years ago, L’Oreal dropped their Glam Bronze ($9.99, buymebeauty.com) line, which are 3 shades (light, medium, and dark) that have a beautiful, healthy sheen – no detectable glitter anywhere. Since then they’ve renamed it a few times, but the formula remains the same from what I can tell! No fade out here!

So I have sort of an unconventional highlighter here that will absolutely beat the heat. Hear me out – Ulta Tinted Eye Primer ($12, ULTA) in Champagne. YUP! So I got this as a freebie with something – might have been a gift with purchase, I don’t really remember. But I tossed it aside, until one day I was cleaning out my kit, and swatching things, and you guys….this is just beautiful. Such a pretty universal shade. Shimmery but not glittery. And then I tried to wipe it off, and it would. not. budge. It ultimately took some coconut oil and a little light scrubbing to remove it. So now, when I want a pretty glow and I need it to stay put, I apply a little with a small beauty sponge, and it’s just so gorgeous. If you wanted to amp it up some more, just apply your favorite powder highlight over it while it’s still tacky – it IS a primer, after all!!

SHADOW, LINER, & MASCARA

Typically in warmer weather, I tend to forego any eye makeup, but if you’re someone that feels your look isn’t complete without it, or maybe you’re attending an event, then you’re gonna wanna pay attention here!

img_7731

Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo ($3 and up, Walmart) shadows and Revlon ColorStay Creme Eyeshadow’s ($4.99 and up, Walmart) are some of the best around. They go on beautifully, come in plenty of colors to suit any look you’re creating, and they don’t fade, crease, or smudge. I would advice to work quickly though, as they do dry down and set REALLY fast! But once they do, they’re not going anywhere!!

So whether you need a touch of liner to maximize your eyes, or you like a little wing action (or a lot!), I’ve got some reliable lines that have yet to disappoint. One is another Maybelline product (what? They’re sooo good!) – the Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner ($7.49, Target) (my fave is the shade ‘Blackest Black’). But if you prefer a liquid, the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ($20, Sephora) and the NYX Epic Ink Liner ($9, ULTA) are both totally summer resistant! And between you and me, the only difference I can spot between the KVD and NYX is the price!

Mascara is one of those finicky things that while one works for one person, it may not work for another. I’ve tried so many different mascaras over the years. Only one has really left me impressed in both application and longevity – the Maybelline Volum’ Express Pumped Up! Colossal Volume Mascara ($6.79, Target). I actually never tried the waterproof version of this because the regular one wore so well for me with no smudging, smearing, transferring, or flaking that I never felt the need to stray. But the big, fat, full brush and Maybelline’s notoriously not-too-wet, not-too-dry formula are like the absolute best combination. You get full, fluffy lashes with great separation, but you can always comb through with a clean spoolie if you feel like you need just a little more. Guys. Put this down right now and GO BUY IT.

And if you want details on how to heat-proof your brows, check out my updated brow routine here, which is full of tips, products, and everything you need to keep them in place all day!!

APRIL 2016 FAVORITES

Here we go again! It’s time for another monthly favorites post, of course!
Don’t worry, I won’t bore you with a long intro – let’s get started!

P.S. I’m sorry I’m late!

MORPHE MB23 ROUND BLENDER ($4.99)

I absolutely love this brush for applying my transition color, and buffing out harsh lines. And as an added bonus, it’s a great dupe for the Sigma E40, which can be a little on the pricey side, coming in right around $16 for a single brush. This has quickly become one of my everyday, go-to brushes.

L’OREAL INFALLIBLE PRO-MATTE 24HR FOUNDATION ($12.99)

If you’re looking for a foundation that stays put through pretty much any situation, this will be your new baby! The shade range can be a little tricky (I have to mix two of them to get my perfect shade), but for such a fantastic formula from the drugstore, it’s worth buying two! It’s demi-matte, so not totally flat and lifeless, but it’s nearly budge proof, similar to like a MAC Pro Longwear, for example. It’s full coverage formula can be a little thick, so I prefer to apply this with a damp sponge, which still gives a medium to full coverage but without the cake face.

NYX SLIM LIP PENCILS ($3.49)

Lately I’ve been feeling the matte lip look. I know, it’s spring. And most people go for glossy in the spring and summer. But something about matte, neutral lips has been calling to me lately. NYX Slim Lip Pencils are great for that, with a huge selection of colors, a long wearing finish, coconut oil to help hydrate the lips so they’re never uncomfortable, and did I mention that many of the shades are dupes for MAC lip pencils? Jussayin’. Some of my favorite shades are Peek-a-boo Natural, Ever, Nude Pink, and Mauve. I seriously can’t get enough.

NEUTROGENA SKINCLEARING OIL-FREE MAKEUP ($13.99)

Alright, so I’ve had this foundation in my collection for quite some time, and haven’t touched it in probably equally as long. When I suffered from horrible acne, this was my go-to. And recently, thanks to hormones and stress ganging up on me at the same time, my skin went absolutely bat-shit-crazy and broke out everywhere. And this foundation came to the rescue. I have it in the shade ‘Buff’, which is slightly too dark for me at the moment, but a few more hours in the sun should do the trick. I just mix it with a lighter foundation. This foundation, though, contains Salicylic Acid, which helps to treat breakouts while concealing them with it’s light to medium, but buildable coverage. My preferred method of application is with a flat top kabuki like the Sigma F80, because I find I get the most amount of coverage that way. It’s not drying, keeps you matte, looks as natural as a heavier foundation can (I like it, and I hate looking like I’m wearing heavy foundation, if that’s any consolation), and it doesn’t clog your pores and aggravate any active breakouts. If I had one complaint with this foundation, it’s that the entire line errs on the pink-toned side, and in my experience I’ve found that yellow tones help to neutralize redness associated with acne, but hey, it’s still a great foundation!

ULTA BROW TINT ($10)

I won’t even lie; six days out of seven, I’m totally lazy about my brows. I just don’t always want to pencil them in, and shape them, and make them look perfect and all that. So on my “lazy days” I tend to reach for my ULTA Brow Tint. It’s a tinted brow gel with pretty heavy pigmentation, and I would compare it to the Benefit Gimme Brow in the sense that it too, has a teeny tiny little brush, but not the fibers (there are none that I can see). It comes in three shades, Light, Medium, and Deep, and it retails for $10, but ULTA brand cosmetics are always on sale, so you can usually get a great deal!

FAVORITE ULTA BRAND MAKEUP

When I first discovered ULTA, I was more excited than I think I’ve ever been about anything else in my life – ya know, except the birth of my son, the day I got married, the usual HAHA!

I knew that they were sort of a mecca of all things beauty – high end, drugstore, skin care, hair care, tools, salon services, etc. What I didn’t know, what they had their own brand of cosmetics and tools. So when I discovered that, I thought ‘ok, so is it like the equivalent of store brand anything else? Like Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, etc, all have their own “knock off” brand, if you will, of various skin and hair care, beauty tools, etc.

Boy oh boy was I wrong!

While I haven’t run down the entire aisle and tried one of each and every product – mainly because there are some that really just don’t appeal to me – there are some that I have tried and swear by as part of my regular beauty routine!

I would say it started back in August of this year (2015) when I went into my local ULTA and made a rather large purchase with a gift card I received for my birthday. With a $50 purchase, they were giving away a bag full of ULTA brand cosmetics and tools in both full and sample sizes, all neatly tucked inside a really pretty little makeup bag. And I’m a sucker for a beauty goodie bag, who are we kidding?

They weren’t all hits, though, but it did inspire me to go back and try a few items on my own. So below, you’ll find listed some of my favorite things from ULTA’s store brand – who knows, maybe you’ll discover a new favorite of your own!

ULTA CHEEK COLOR in SUN KISSED ($7)

I got this as part of a blush and highlighter sample duo. While I’m not crazy about the highlighter, as I found it to be chalky, too white, and just glittery, I absolutely fell in love with the blush! It’s a powder blush I would call it’s pigmentation a medium, but it’s definitely buildable, and it’s probably the most natural looking blush I’ve ever used! I haven’t had the opportunity to try any of their other shades, but I have plans to pick up a few more in the coming weeks!

ULTA MINERAL LIP GLOSSES ($8 each)

One day I wandered into ULTA in a local mall with my stepdaughter, and we were browsing the ULTA brand display, when I came across their Mineral Lip Glosses. I swatched the shade Pink Topaz and I knew I had to have it! It’s a pinky brown, very neutral shade, with a  medium pigmentation that really compliments any look. So I grabbed it. About a week later I went back because I found I was enjoying the one I had purchased so much that I wanted to check out some of their other shades – I ended up grabbing Moonstone, which is a pretty mauve/purple kind of shade with just the slightest bit of shimmer in it, and Rose Garnet, which in terms of color (not formula) reminds me of the Gerard Cosmetics lip gloss in Rose Hill, which was created by YouTuber and professional makeup artist Jaclyn Hill. It’s a mix between a pink and red, but not too much on either side. Very complimentary on anyone. The formula is a little on the thin, sort of slippery side (not sticky at all) so they don’t have the greatest staying power, but I find that some of the darker pigmented shades, like the Rose Garnet for example, leave behind a really pretty stain on the lips. I definitely recommend these!

ULTA BRILLIANT COLOR LIP GLOSS in GUAVA and SPICE ($8 each)

I received a little sample size in the above mentioned gift bag in a shimmery, neutral shade that unfortunately I can’t find listed on their website (discontinued?) and the sticker on the bottom with the shade name naturally fell off somewhere. Opal maybe? Any who – I wasn’t crazy about the color so much as I loved the formula – not too sticky, but just enough so that it stuck around for a solid 3-4 hours before I needed to touch up. So I went back and started swatching. Guava is a pretty, girly, natural looking pink with a little bit of what looks like golden shimmer in it – not glitter, shimmer. On my lips it looks really fresh and natural. Spice is more of a shimmery, borderline metallic rosy brown shade, with sort of purple undertones, but still looks pretty natural. They have a light pigmentation that still lets the natural color of your lips show through, but simply enhances it and takes it to that gorgeous, glossy next level. I may or may not have a few backups of each shade, just in case they pull and Opal (?) on me! 😉

ULTA BROW TINT ($10)

I’ve seen this compared to the Benefit Gimme Brow, though the only similarity I can see is the tiny spoolie brush. This is just what it says – a brow tint – a tinted mascara with no fibers. Benefit’s product contains fibers. I didn’t mind that it was just a tinted brow mascara, and actually went and purchased this on my own in the shade Medium first (it comes in Light, Medium, and Deep), but thought it was too dark and wasn’t sure it looked very natural on me. So when I went in and did my birthday shopping, I was delighted to see that there was a brow tint in Light waiting for me in that pretty little purple bag of makeup fun. I actually use them together now, the light shade for the inner part of my brow, and the medium for the tail to darken it up a bit and make it look more filled in. I totally plan to repurchase these when I run out. They’re a wonderful product.

ULTA LEGENDARY LENGTHS MASCARA ($10)

This was a full size product I received in the aforementioned gift with purchase, and I really didn’t expect much from it. But I like it! It has a slight hourglass style curve to the plastic/rubber bristle wand that reminds me of Maybelline’s Define-A-Lash, except this one seems to pack on some volume with the length. Not a crazy amount, but enough that you won’t find yourself reaching for 2 or 3 different mascaras to achieve the look you want. The formula is a little on the wet side, which could make it tricky and messy to work with, but thats nothing a good quality lash comb and a Q-tip can’t take care of for you. The end result is way worth it!

ULTA SALON FORMULA NAIL LACQUER in BITTERSWEET ($6)

Ok, while not technically MAKEUP, it still deserves a mention. Mine was a sample. so it’s already gone, but it’s on my list to pick up another one. It’s a beautiful deep, vampy, burgundy shade that leans a little more on the purple/brown side (if that makes sense?) but it’s THE perfect fall nail color! It’s gone because it’s all I’ve been wearing since like, mid-September!
