VIVA LAS VEGAS | DAY TO NIGHT MAKEUP TUTORIAL

Hey guys!

So as you may or may not know, from time to time I get some wonderful opportunities to work with awesome companies and create looks for them inspired by various things, which I in turn, share with you all. Well today, I’m participating in a challenge presented to me from Vegas.com, in which I was asked to create a day to night makeup tutorial! Pretty cool, right?

Now personally, I’ve never been to Las Vegas; I’ve never even left the East Coast. But when I think Vegas, I think glitz and glam and drama (not necessarily in a bad way!) and shows and clubs and music and……I could go on and on. But in browsing their amazing hotel package deals page, I found myself immediately drawn to and inspired by one place in particular; The Venetian. There’s just something about warm tones and gold accents that makes this very “Vegas” to me. And it’s good to know that if I ever get the chance to visit, they’ve taken the time to put together a page of some of their best deals and packages for shows, attractions, and more!

So if you want to see my day to night transition, just keep on reading!

DAYTIME MAKEUP LOOK

If nothing else, when I initially think of Vegas, I think hot! I mean, it’s super ridiculously hot there, and although it’s (to my knowledge) dry, desert heat, it’s still hot! So when it’s hot, the last thing I want is a full face of makeup!

All I’ve done for daytime (which is, let’s be real, no different than my usual daytime looks) is fill in my brows with my Salon Perfect Brow Defining Kit, using and angled brush and spoolie, and a mixture of the taupe shade and dark brown shade (taupe for the inner part, dark brown for the tail), and set it in place with my HG Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel. Then, I spot conceal with my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer and a Morphe M173 brush. Since I’m currently very light (for summer), I’m going to set my concealer in place with my Coty Airspun Translucent Loose Powder and an e.l.f. Powder Brush, and then warm up the entire perimeter of the face with the Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer and a Morphe M527. Next I pop on a little Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso, using a Morphe E4, and some Maybelline Lip Studio Color Jolt in Stripped Down.

You may be thinking ‘what about the eyes?’. Lately I’ve noticed that when it’s super hot out, mascara just bothers my eyes, whether it’s waterproof or not. It’s just not comfortable in extreme heat. Besides, if you happen to be sitting poolside at a swanky hotel and decide to cool off in the water, you won’t have to worry about flakes and raccoon eyes when the cabana boy eyes you toweling off!

NIGHTIME MAKEUP LOOK

Ok, so here’s where we punch up the drama a little bit! I’m not one for loud, crowded clubs, but I do enjoy a nice meal, a frozen margarita, and a great show, so of course I want to look my best!

Anytime I’m doing a super dramatic look, I like to start with the eyes; why? Because as you’re working with smokier, darker shadows, or even glitter, you’re bound to have fallout, and it’s easier to wipe it off clean skin than fix my foundation and concealer! I also like to fill in my brows before starting with shadows, because I feel like the structure of the brow helps to guide where my shadow will go, if that makes sense.

I’m going to first prime my brows with some LORAC Behind the Scenes Eyeshadow Primer, which is a great trick if you find your brows tend to fade on you throughout the day or night. Then I’m going to fill them in pretty dramatically with my NYX Micro Brow Pencil in  Brunette. If you want more detailed steps as to how I fill in my brows, you can click here for my blog post, or here for my YouTube video. After my brows are filled in, I’m going to prime my eyes with MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in the shade NW20, and blend that out with a damp beauty blender. I prefer the beauty blender over say, my fingers because I’ve noticed I get a much more even base on my lids, and then while I have the concealer out, I’m going to grab any flat definer brush (I used the Karity E26) to clean up and carve out my brows, making them nice and neat and defined. Then I’ll set the entire area with Coty Airspun Powder and a Real Techniques Setting Brush, to ensure that the shadows I’m using next will blend smoothly.

Now I’m going to grab my Morphe M441 (any long hair blending brush will do) and pick up some Makeup Geek ‘Beaches and Cream’ to use as my transition shade. It’s just slightly darker than my skin tone, and using a shade like this will help any darker shades go on so much more smooth. I’m going to work this all over the crease area, back and forth, blending in circles, making sure there are no harsh lines.
Then I’ll take a Morphe M433 (which is just a smaller, shorter hair blending brush) and picking up some Makeup Geek ‘Cupcake’, start working that into the crease just a little lower than the transition shade. Same motions, back and forth, just keep it a little lower. You want to be careful when you’re working with pink shades, because you can end up looking sick or like you have pink eye if you get too crazy; the next step will help us avoid that!
Next, on a tapered blending brush (I used the Morphe M330), I’m going to pick up some Makeup Geek ‘Frappe’, which is a nice warm, medium toned brown shade that will create a beautiful shadow or contour to the eye. I’m going to focus that more on the outer third of the eye, and once I don’t have as much product on my brush, I’m going to begin to swoop it into the crease, but no further than about the middle of the eyebrow. Then I’ll go back with my M433 and use whatever is left of ‘Cupcake’ on that to blend out any harsh edges (don’t add additional shadow to the brush for this step, just blend!).

Now for the fun part – I’m going to first apply some NYX Glitter Primer to my lid, but only the inner half, and here’s why; I don’t want it all the way to the outer corner because after we apply this next shadow, and then sort of ombre them together, using a matte shadow on a blending brush over a tacky glitter primer will just make your shadow patchy and impossible to blend.
So rather than use my finger, I’m going to use a tiny little flat, synthetic haired eyeshadow brush from ULTA (it came in a ‘gift with purchase’) and apply my primer from the very inner corner, following along my natural crease, and sort of start to feather it across the lid as there is less and less on my brush; so you want the most product on the inner corner, then less and less as you move across the lid.
Then, using a Morphe M167 brush (or any flat packing brush), I’m going to apply L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Amber Rush pretty generously on that inner corner, and lighter towards the center, kind of feathering it out. Once you have every tacky, primered area covered, you can go back with that ‘Frappe’ color we used on the outer corner, and gently blend it together with the ‘Amber Rush’.

I felt like this look called for a pretty dramatic winged liner, so using my absolute favorite Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner in Blackest Black, and a Karity E22 brush, I’m going to create the most perfect, razor sharp wing I think I’ve EVER done on myself in one try! If you want to see a winged liner tutorial, I’ll link that blog post here.

Moving on to the skin, finally! I’m going to start by using two different primers, for two different reasons; I get oily in my t-zone, so for that I love the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. Everywhere else on my face has gotten very dry lately (I blame my turning 30 two days ago!), so to add some luminosity, I’ll use the L’Oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer everywhere else. Once my primer has a chance to sink in, I’m going in with the L’Oreal True Match makeup in N3, and after dotting it all over my face (lightly; you can always add more!), I’m going to begin blending it out with a flat top kabuki, like a Sigma F80, first in stippling motions, then buffing, and then I’ll pounce over everything with a very damp beauty blender to make sure I’m picking up any excess foundation that might make me look cakey.

Now to conceal and highlight, I’m using my absolute HG concealer, the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer in Light Warm, and blending it out with a, you guessed it, damp beauty blender (this thing does it all for me!).
Once my concealer is all blended,  I’m going to use that same damp sponge to pick up my It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Loose powder and bake under the eyes, my chin, my upper lip, and from the center of my forehead, down the bridge of my nose. To set the rest of my foundation, I’ll apply the same powder using an e.l.f. Powder Brush.

After a few minutes, I dust away the excess powder from baking, and grabbing a large angled contour brush from Walgreens (it’s old but it’s amazeballs!) I’m going to apply my Benefit Hoola Bronzer to my forehead, the cheeks, and my jawline and neck, just to bring some color back to my face.
To contour, I’m going to use one of my faves, the NYX HD Blush in Taupe, on a NARS Ita brush, and take that to the hollows of my cheeks, my temples, jawline, and down the sides of my nose.
Still feeling pretty pale, I grabbed my trusty Morphe E4 and my favorite “drugstore” blush, the ULTA Cheek Color in Sunkissed. This even has a little bit of a sheen to it, making it a beautiful color for any occasion, but you know me, I wanna glow to the heavens!
Using Colourpop Super Shock Cheek Highlight in Wisp, which is a beautiful golden shade, I’m going to apply that with my fingers (the best way for this formula, I think!) to the top of my cheekbones, down the center of my nose as well as on the very tip, and my cupids bow.

With my powder and concealer and basically the rest of my face done, it’s time to move onto the lower lash line. Grabbing another (clean) flat definer brush like the Morphe M432, I’m going to pick up some black eyeshadow (I used a Morphe single eyeshadow in the shade Coal), and I’m going to really work that as tight as possible against my lower lash line, and bring it tight into the outer corner to meet that wing. I also want to bring it towards the inner corner (which I rarely do) to get that super squinty, smokey look. Then taking a Morphe M431 (any pencil brush works fine) I’m going to pick up a little more Makeup Geek ‘Frappe’ and use that to smoke out that black shadow. Just run it over the black line that you created on your lower lash line, back and forth; don’t be afraid to really smoke it out – that’s what makes this eye look so dramatic and fun! Then I lined my upper and lower waterline with Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner in Black, and rather than use falsies (because not everyone is comfortable with them) I really loaded on the Maybelline The Falsies Mascara to both my top and bottom lashes, after priming my lashes with Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer.

And finally, since my eyes are so bold, I really wanted to keep a neutral lip, so I lined and filled in my lips with NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Peekaboo Neutral, and then topped it off with Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Creme Brûlée. After a quick blast of your favorite setting spray, you’re ready to take on Vegas!!

REVIEW | URBAN DECAY VICE 4 PALETTE

I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I’ve really been wanting to step outside of my neutrals-laden comfort zone. Which I have to admit I’ve done. But nothing quite forces you outside of the box quite like a bright, shimmery palette. Enter, the Urban Decay Vice 4 Limited EditionEyeshadow Palette.

I actually have to thank my sister, Heather, for this one. She picked one up on a trip to NYC when she poked her head into a Sephora and found this little baby on sale for $39, down from it’s original price of $60. And naturally, when she brought it home, I had to get my fingers in there for some swatches (which I’m sure aggravated her to no end). Afterwards, I decided mama needed one of her own.

Here’s a product description from Urban Decay :

We channeled all the darkly gorgeous, dimensional hues of an oil slick (inspired by our vintage shade name Oil Slick) into a palette filled with rich, deep jewel tones. Vice4 features a stunning array of colors and a wide range of finishes, from buttery-smooth mattes and shimmering metallics to shades laced with micro-glitter. Every shade features our Pigment Infusion System™, a proprietary blend of ingredients for rich, velvety, blendable color that lasts (and sparkle that doesn’t fall).

So let’s get started!

PACKAGING

The palette contains 20 beautiful shades in both shimmer and matte finishes, situated in a plastic palette with a gigantic mirror and a dual ended brush. The shade names are printed underneath each pan (thank god, I hate having to flip it over to know what shade I’m using!), and the outer lid has a matte black, plastic underlay, with a raised, plastic overlay of what looks like shattered glass (the best way I can thing to describe it), which is painted with metallic inks in for ‘oil slick’ effect. The palette itself comes inside a zippered makeup bag inside the box. Bonus!

FORMULA

One thing I noticed in swatching is that there seems to be a slight inconsistency in terms of formula. Most of them are very soft and buttery, while others, I felt like I had to really press and swirl my finger to pick up any shadow. The matte shades are a little on the chalky side, but not to the point where I won’t use them. They aren’t bad, just a little powdery.

APPLICATION & SWATCHES

While I haven’t actually worn these shades on the eyes yet, below you’ll find swatches of all the shades.

L-R: Bones, Grip, Beatdown, Dead Beat, Pandemonium

L-R: Framed, Fast-Ball, 1985, Underhand, Harlot

L-R: Discreet, Grasshopper, C-Note, Arctic, Robbery

L-R: Bitter, Flame, Low, Crowbar, Delete

As you can see, they swatch beautifully. On every one, I’ve swirled my finger in the pan 3-4 times, and swiped on my arm once. With no primer. And in terms of lasting power, well, I had to really scrub at my arm between swatches to get the colors off. That says something, for sure. And yes, the photos were taken indoors, with flash, because I can only get anything done at night! Ha!
Honestly, I can’t wait to create a fun look for you guys with this palette!

So, in searching on the Sephora website, as well as Urban Decay’s website, it looks like the palette is sold out. But UD has an email notification list, which leads me to believe they may restock it….? I don’t know. But it can’t hurt to try! Of course, you can always try Amazon, eBay, etc.!

Have you guys tried this palette? Will you be looking for one of your own now? Leave me a comment and let me know!

REVIEW | KEVYN AUCOIN THE SENSUAL SKIN ENHANCER

Awhile back, I did a post called ‘Disappointing Beauty Products‘, in which this product was included. I didn’t hate it, but for the price, I wasn’t necessarily floored by it, either.

At the time, I was dealing with some major skin issues and acne flare-ups, and everyone and their mother swore that this would cover it like nothing else out there. Well, when applied to my semi-oily skin, it did absolutely nothing for me. And then a few weeks ago, I was surfing Poshmark (which I’ll get into later) and found it for nearly half the retail price.
In my shade.
Eh, what the hell…..
I placed my order.

So let’s back up for a second here. First I want to share what it is, and what it claims, per Sephora;

Cover all your bases with The Sensual Skin Enhancer. This all-in-one, waterproof formula delivers complete coverage when used as a concealer, highlighter, an allover foundation, or to contour your features. Infused with jojoba and honey, it works to hydrate the skin, and it is formulated with minerals that support the skin and is sweat proof and transfer resistant for full coverage and long-lasting wear.

If you want to see my revised, full review, keep on reading!

PACKAGING

img_0596Big things come in small packages? Yeah, basically. The whopping 0.63 oz of this multipurpose formula comes and small, burgundy pot with a twist off lid that simply says ‘Kevyn Aucoin’ across the top. The shade information can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the pot.

FORMULA

This stuff is incredibly thick; it’s easy to go overboard, in which case you’ll likely end up hating the finish and cursing your wasted money (much like I did at first). But when applied sparingly and blended rather quickly, it melts into the skin for a ‘your skin but better’ look. It’s very creamy and hydrating (get your powder ready, babes!) thanks to ingredients like honey and jojoba. One of the greatest things is that it comes in 16 shades (I wear SX03 for reference), broken down by tone and undertone, making it fairly easy to find the best match for you.
For a drugstore comparison, this is comparable in formula to the Hard Candy Glamoflague Heavy Duty Concealer.

APPLICATION & WEAR

So here’s what made me dislike it the first time around; I used way too much, didn’t use a primer, didn’t powder, and didn’t set it with a spray. All on acne-ridden, combination/oily skin. Admittedly, not my brightest move, and quite frankly, I should have known better.
However, what made me give it a second chance, is the fact that my skin has been drying out lately (I think it knows it’s about to turn 30), and because this is so hydrating, it was worth giving it another look.

So here is the best way I’ve found to apply it (at least for me);
I prime my skin with the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water (another product I didn’t love, but has grown on me), and then spot conceal with the Kevyn Aucoin SSE and a Real Techniques Fine Liner Brush to apply it. I then blend with a Morphe M173 brush, and set it with my It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Silk HD Anti-Aging Micro-Powder. If I’m feeling a little too ‘powdery’, I’ll set it all in place with the Smashbox Primer Water or some Urban Decay Chill Makeup Setting Spray.

So far, I’ve only used this as a concealer – quite frankly, putting this all over my face scares me, because it’s so heavy. And I’ve yet to apply it under my eyes because well, it’s thick. And creamy. And will probably crease. But hell, with enough powder to set it, it may work well. And this little pot will last literally forever because you need so little product to cover everything you want.
I’ll admit, I am glad that I gave this product a second chance. It lasts all day long, doesn’t slip around or break down once it’s set, and while I’ve yet to test the validity of the waterproof claim, I can tell you that it’s been rather warm and humid around here lately, and it stayed exactly where I put it. All. Freakin’. Day.

OVERALL RATING : 5/5

Have you guys tried this stuff yet? It’s available on sephora.com  (online only, it’s not sold in stores) and it retails for $48. I know, I know. That’s expensive. But given that I’ve figured out how to ride the learning curve like a pro, I’d totally pay full price again and again! Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

REVIEW | HOURGLASS VEIL MINERAL PRIMER

I’ll be totally honest, you guys; I’ve been on the fence about reviewing this particular product for awhile now. Why, you ask? Because it’s so damn, ridiculously expensive.

I’m talking about the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($52/Sephora). I received a sample of it in a Sephora order, and since it’s surrounded by so much buzz, I just had to try it for myself!

Here’s what Hourglass has to say about their product;

What it is:
A mineral-based, water-resistant primer that neutralizes the skin, minimizes shine, and creates a smooth, uniform canvas for flawless makeup application.

What it does:
This clean, satin-finish formula helps keep makeup looking fresh and prevents fading. Veil Mineral Primer also absorbs excess oils and minimizes the appearance of pores by evenly distributing light to help hide and soften the look of skin imperfections and fine lines.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
– Parabens
– Sulfates
– Phthalates

What else you need to know:
This water-resistant primer is also 100 percent free of fragrance, oil, and gluten.

So, is it really worth all the hype? Keep reading to find out!

PACKAGING & PRICE

In terms of packaging, you’ve got some options. The first is a travel size (great for trying it out!) and it comes with 0.33 fl oz ($18) in a small bottle with a black cap. The second, is a full size at 1 fl oz ($52), in a frosted glass bottle with a deep bronzey colored cap, and then a ‘jumbo’ size, which is 2 fl oz ($72). The travel size and full size both come with a pump, and the jumbo is a squeeze tube. All three have the name of the product printed on the front.

FORMULA

The formula is an opaque white with a lotion-like consistency, and it has a very similar slip to that of a silicone primer. It almost feels greasy if you rub your fingers together after application, but it dries to a smooth, powdery finish.

APPLICATION & WEAR

Before I get too deep here, if you’re not already familiar, here is some background on my skin type; combination/oily, mostly oily in the summer, with dry cheeks. However, thanks to my skin care routine, I seem to have the oiliness under control and am much closer to normal/dry. I totally recommend this for those with oily skin, or even combination skin, however, if you’re on the drier side, you may want to grab a sample and try it out to make sure it doesn’t cling to dry patches, make you more dry, etc.
In terms of application, a little bit really goes a very long way. I used roughly the size of a small pearl, and that covered my entire face. It’s got almost a sheen to it upon application, which I presume are ingredients that aid in neutralizing redness in the skin (good lookin’ out, minerals!). It glides over the skin and leaves you looking nearly poreless!
Now onto how it wore! Let me start by saying, that I put this to the test on a few different occasions; date night with my husband, where we went for dinner and drinks, outside, at night, in nearly 100% humidity, and for an afternoon of running from a benefit BBQ to a cookout style engagement party, which basically means I got to chase my toddler around in 80 degree weather with a full face of makeup. Sweet.
In both instances, my skin remained matte. And I mean matte. My makeup stayed in place, despite sweating on my upper lip and around my hairline (never fails!). Even dabbing at the sweat, when I got home that night, my makeup looked like I had just applied it, less a few mascara smudges and false lashes that, at that point, were so over it. Color me impressed.

Oh, and in case you were wondering – no, it didn’t break me out at all! My sensitive, sassy skin handled this primer with the grace of Princess Di.

OVERALL RATING : 5/5

Like I said, I was really hesitant to review this primer, considering the hefty price tag that accompanies it. But I’ve told you guys in the past, if something is worth every single, freakin’ penny, that I would let you know! I believe this is that product! Seriously, put a couple bucks away from each paycheck, and go pick up a bottle of this stuff for yourself!

Have you guys tried this primer yet? What are some of your faves? Leave me a comment with your thoughts!

REVIEW | BECCA X JACLYN HILL CHAMPAGNE COLLECTION FACE PALETTE

img_1657Recently in my ‘May 2016 Favorites’, I mentioned that I had managed to grab the Becca X Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Face Palette ($52 / Sephora *Limited Edition*) during the ‘Snapchat Launch’. By that I mean that during an event in NYC, she took to Snapchat to announce that a limited quantity was available that night on the Sephora mobile app, and it could only be found by entering ‘#champagneglow’ in the search bar. Needless to say, I didn’t even finish watching the Snap Story before rushing to open up the Sephora app on my phone, whipping out my debit card, and placing my order (I didn’t even choose complimentary samples or use the 300+ points that I had saved – thats dedication!).

Here’s what Sephora and Becca have to say about the palette :

What it is:
A limited-edition, iconic face palette, featuring five shades of highlighter and blush—in collaboration with Jaclyn Hill, creator of the original Champagne Pop.

What it does:
This palette gives you all the glow you could want—all in one place. This limited-edition, covetable BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Face Palette features five shades of highlighter and blush to illuminate all skintones, allowing you to customize your looks. Get the iconic Champagne Pop and new shades designed by Jaclyn Hill. It includes two Highlighter shades, two Mineral Blush shades, and a Luminous Blush hue in Rosé Spritz for a pop of color. Mix and match the shades to create endless layers of light and color for your perfect, custom glow. Just sweep the creamy powders across the face, or layer them to highlight your favorite features with universally flattering shades. This palette is perfect for achieving your own, glowing look.

So, is it really all it’s hyped up to be? Let’s find out!

PACKAGING

img_1657This ‘meaty’ palette (Jaclyn’s words, and I agree) feels sturdy and solid. The very front is a glossy white, with a sprinkling of golden dots, said to be similar to popping a bottle of champagne (very JH, if you ask me!), with the Becca name forming a circle around Jaclyn’s name. When you open it up, there’s a huge mirror, the size of the palette, and the three blushes and two highlighters are set into a shiny gold base that is nothing short of gorgeous.

FORMULA

The formula is exactly what you would expect from Becca; smooth, buttery powders with high pigmentation and a beautiful, lightweight, long wearing finish.

APPLICATION & WEAR

Like I mentioned above, these babies are highly pigmented, especially the blushes! Rosé Spritz is a ‘Luminous Blush’, and it’s a gorgeous pink color with a golden shimmer. Amaretto is a ‘Mineral Blush’ in a toasted almond shade, and Pamplemousse is another ‘Mineral Blush’ in a matte, coral pink. I recommend applying these with a very light hand, and blending well.
Both of the highlighters are the classic ‘Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed’ formula, and apply beautifully as well. Champagne Pop is included in the palette, as well as a new, exclusive-to-the-palette shade, Prosecco Pop, which is a very obvious warm gold. Check out the swatches, all with no primer, and one swipe!

img_1760Left to Right: Rosé Spritz, Amaretto, Pamplemousse, Champagne Pop, and Prosecco Pop.

I’ll admit, I don’t use the palette much because of it’s limited nature, but it was worth every penny to be able to have it in my collection! I have a separate ‘Champagne Pop’ that I’ll be more inclined to use more often knowing that I have another one waiting patiently for me in this palette.

OVERALL RATING : 5/5

I think of every, single palette I own, this is by far my favorite, and the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen! If you haven’t been able to get it yet, it will be re-released on June 16th, 2016, but that’s the last time; once it’s gone, it’s gone forever!

Will you be picking one up for yourself? Do you already have it? Leave me a comment with your thoughts!

CONCEALER 101 : TIPS, TRICKS & RECOMMENDATIONS

Concealer. Oohhh concealer. I think if I had to choose one beauty product for the rest of my life, it would be concealer.

The thing is though, it can be tricky to find the right one for you. Colors, formulas, to color correct or not?
Believe me honey, I know your pain. I have a drawer (yes, a whole drawer) dedicated to concealers. No really, look.

img_1644

Despite the seemingly excessive number of concealers I own, I’m always on the hunt for the “perfect” concealer. A site called ‘Into The Gloss‘ has a fantastic list in which they’ve compiled some of the best concealers around, and I was inspired to pull together a list of my own faves, including color correctors, and how to use them!

So if you want to learn how to find the right one, as well as see some of my personal faves, just keep reading!

WHY DO WE NEED/USE CONCEALER?

Aside from doing the obvious, which is concealing flaws, concealers are great at other things! I personally use concealer to prime my eyelids for shadow, clean up my brows, winged liner, or lips, highlight, and even cream contour and highlight! Some are thicker, some are thinner, sheer to full coverage; there is literally a formula for every situation!

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT FORMULA?

Choosing the right formula all depends on what you’re looking to do; if you’re working on concealing dark circles or discoloration, you’ll want a gel or serum formula. Especially under the eyes, you want something hydrating, but not too thick so it doesn’t crease.
Similarly, if you’re trying to conceal blemishes, you want something a bit hydrating that doesn’t cling to dry patches or that dry, flaky skin that accompanies a healing blemish (you know what I’m talking about), but is thick enough to actually cover said blemish. And trust me, if there’s one thing I know, it’s covering blemishes, honey! I promise you!

HOW DO I APPLY IT? FINGERS/BRUSHES/SPONGES??

Applying different formulas depends on the look you’re going for, where you’re applying it and why, and the formula you’re working with.
If you’re applying concealer to the under eye area, I generally like to apply it with a damp sponge. It helps to blend it seamlessly, absorb excess product (which helps avoid cake face), and adds a little extra hydration to a typically delicate, drier area, versus tugging at it with a brush. No matter the formula you’re working with, I always recommend patting motions with your sponge, pouncing it up and down, while moving back and forth from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner, and back again. This ensure that the concealer isn’t applied in just one direction, and will aid in keeping it from settling into those tiny little fine lines hiding under the lashes; you know, the ones that seem to be especially highlighted with concealer. One of my favorite sponges, besides the beautyblender, is the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. I love it for it’s flat edge that really allows you to get up under the lashes.
If you’re working to conceal a blemish, particularly spot concealing, I like to first apply the product with a fine tip brush, like the Real Techniques Fine Liner Brush, and blend it out either with my ring finger (clean, of course!) or a dense, synthetic brush like the Morphe M173 or the e.l.f. Flawless Concealer Brush. Again, regardless of whether you choose to use a brush or your finger, I recommend patting motions with light pressure. The only advantage to using a brush over your finger, I’ve found, is that the bristles of the brush help to push the product into your skin and give it a very skin like finish, whereas the heat of your finger can actually warm up the product too much, to where it starts to slip and slide around.
No matter what tools you choose to apply your concealer, always set it with a powder! This ensures that your hard work wasn’t for nothing!

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH COLOR CORRECTING?

Color Correcting can seem intimidating, but it’s actually a very necessary step in properly concealing, well, anything. A lot of brands are starting to introduce color correctors as a regular part of their product lineup, including Urban Decay and even the Sephora collection. They too, like concealers, come in varying formulas from cream palettes to more fluid consistencies in tubes.
For a comprehensive look at color correcting, refer to the color wheel below. Yes, the color wheel. That thing that your art teacher used to teach you color theory; the idea is to use the opposite color of the one you’re trying to conceal, or correct. Under eye bags with a purple tint? Use a yellow based corrector. Are they more blue? Try something orange. Need to cover a stubborn red blemish? Green will be your new best friend. Basically the shade you want to correct with is the shade opposite of what you’re trying to cover.
I know, it seems tricky, but a little practice makes perfect!

WHAT ARE SOME OF MY FAVES?

Oh, here comes the fun part! Like I said, concealer is one of, if not my absolute, must-have beauty item.
If I had to choose just one go-t0 concealer for everything and anything, it would be the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer. It’s hydrating, it covers redness, blemishes, hyper-pigmentation, it looks like skin, it’s demi-matte, and it stays on all day.
One that I find myself reaching for when I have a particularly stubborn blemish, or when I need something thicker to clean up my brows or winged liner, is the Hard Candy Glamoflague Concealer. This one is super full coverage, and you literally only need the a pin-head sized amount to cover just about anything on your face. A word of caution though; this is incredibly thick, creamy, and richly pigmented, so I don’t recommend using this under the eyes.
Something that is great for under the eyes, however, as well as cream contouring and highlighting, is the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer. With a standard drugstore shade range of six shades, the lightweight, gel-like consistency and buildable formula makes this my most reached for drugstore concealer on a regular basis! Another great under-eye concealer (that I feel is highly underrated) is the Garnier Anti-Dark Circle Concealer, which is a sheer formula with a roller ball applicator and skin care ingredients! Does it get better?!

REVIEW – ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS CREAM CONTOUR KIT

So it took me awhile, but I finally got my hands on the cream contour kit of the moment – the creme de la creme, if you will.

That’s right, I’m talking about the Anastasia Beverly Hills Cream Contour Kit ($40)! It’s not exactly a new item (I believe it was released sometime last year), but I had been holding out in hopes that they would somehow receive my telepathic cries for help and release a selection of shades for those of us that are simply too light for the ‘Light’ kit.

And they did! When the kit dropped in ‘Fair’, my jaw dropped just as hard. And I knew I needed it. Here’s what they have to say:

This best-selling, easy-to-use palette contains three highlighting and three contouring shades that work together to help you sculpt, define, and enhance your natural features. Create the illusion of higher cheekbones, a smaller forehead, a softer jawline, or a slimmer nose with these smooth formulas that blend seamlessly while imparting a subtle, dewy sheen.

So is it all it’s cracked up to be? Keep reading to find out!

PACKAGING

Originally, the cream contour kit came packaged in the same way as the powder kit; magnetic, removable pans housed in a black, cardboard like palette with the name embossed on the front in a gold finish. For whatever reason they changed the packaging of the cream contour kit, and it now comes in a hard, plastic palette with a clear lid. Travel friendly? Maybe; it feels sturdy enough. I’ll report back should I travel with it in the future.

FORMULA

L to R: Soft Light, Lustre, Fair, Fawn, Shadow, Mink

For a cream formula, it is a little on the dry side. It’s a very thick texture, and I’d venture to say that it’s better suited for combination or oily skin, maybe normal, but it could be tricky for dry skin. As many of you know, I have combination skin, primarily oily in the t-zone, but normal/dry on the cheeks, and this formula works well for me. The swatches above are on my pasty-white, NC15 arm, for shade reference.

APPLICATION & WEAR

I’ve never had such a natural looking contour. While many heavy, cream based formulas, including most foundations, tend to sink into my pores and fine lines, this one doesn’t. I get a super defined, yet natural looking contour that lasts. Seriously, all day long; it doesn’t budge.
I find the best way to apply this is with my fingers, and blend it out with a combination of a damp sponge and a semi-dense synthetic brush. The highlight shades are a bit heavy to use under the eyes, but they’re great for the forehead, nose, cupids bow and chin. So far I’ve made use of every contour shade, and they all look incredibly natural. A light dusting of powder is optional, as I find that most days I don’t even need it, but heading into summer (or ‘oily season’) it never hurts to add a touch.

Overall Rating : 5/5

IS IT A DUPE? NARS LIP GLOSS ‘DOLCE VITA’ vs. REVLON COLOR RICHE LE GLOSS ‘REALLY ROSE’

Are you guys ready for another lippie dupe? ‘Cuz sure am!

While we as women (and men, I haven’t forgotten you boys!) have a love of *expensive* makeup, we aren’t all fortunate enough to have the extra funds available to fulfill said love.
And that’s what dupes are for!
So today, I wanted to dupe a product that quite frankly, I had been after for a long, long time – and even owned the drugstore dupe before I owned the high-end version; NARS Lip Gloss in ‘Dolce Vita’, which is an absolutely beautiful, dusty rose, ‘my lips but better’ shade that works on quite literally everyone. It’s gorgeous.
But it’s $26. For one, single lip gloss. Ouch.

What’s so great about it, you ask? Let’s see what NARS says:

What it is:
A moisturizing lip gloss that supports antiaging and imparts long-wearing, sophisticated shine and stunning color for subtle, everyday glamour.

What it does:
NARS Lip Gloss assists with antiaging and lavishes lips in a full spectrum of shades. Nourishing ingredients moisturize, leaving lips smooth and soft. The doe-foot applicator glides smoothly with comfort and precision for long-lasting wear.

According to Pinterest, a dead-on dupe for this gloss is the L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Gloss in ‘Really Rose’.

If you want to know more, just keep reading!

NARS Lip Gloss – Dolce Vita ($26 / Sephora)

So let’s start with the original.
In terms of packaging, NARS knows how to appeal to the sophisticate in us all – a clear tube that shows the shade of the product, a matte black, almost silicone-y texture to the twist off cap, and a doe foot applicator that picks up the perfect amount of product and distributes is flawlessly on the lips.

As for formula, it’s got a slightly sticky feel; definitely more sticky than slippery, which helps it adhere to the lips better and in turn, last longer, which I appreciate. If I’m going to spend that much on a lip gloss, I don’t want to be reapplying it every half hour and blowing through the tube in a month’s time.
The shade is absolutely beautiful. As I mentioned above, it’s a sheer, dusty rose shade; the perfect, effortless everyday neutral. Pair it with a smokey eye or a minimalistic look and a pair of sweats, it’s literally going to work with everything. If there is a staple shade of gloss that every girl should have, this is the shade.
But I still can’t get over the price, so let’s try to dupe it, shall we??

L’oreal Colour Riche Le Gloss – Really Rose ($7.99 – ULTA)

The packaging of this gloss is totally different – it’s a squeeze tube with a slanted plastic applicator tip and a gold, plastic twist off cap. To be honest, I am generally not a fan of the squeeze tube; I prefer a doe foot applicator, because when you apply the product directly from the tube, you can lose control, over apply, waste product, end up with gloppy lips, and any and all precision goes out the damn window.
I find I’m better off apply this with my finger. If it were a darker, more opaque color, I could see getting by with using a lip brush for application, but who the hell carries a lip brush in their purse to touch up throughout the day?! Not me!

The L’Oreal formula is a little more slippery, which means it’s not as long lasting as the NARS, but maybe by a mere half hour or so. I have noticed that if I haven’t used this in quite some time, when I squeeze the product out, there’s a clear liquid, like an oil of some sort, that comes out ahead of the actual color. So there’s something in the formula that separates inside the tube; which is an easy fix, by simply smushing the tube around between my hands for a minute, but still….eww….
The color though (let’s face it, that’s why we’re really here, after all) is pretty much dead on. I might venture to say that the NARS is slightly more pink in tone, and the L’Oreal is almost a warmer tone, though the swatch does neither justice – they’re both beautiful!
And at a price point like $7.99, combined with drugstore products forever on sale, you can easily score at least four of these glosses for just under the price of one NARS gloss!

So, is it a dupe??

Guys, splurges are nice, but honestly, if you’re wearing the dupe, I promise you, no one will ever know!!
Have you guys tried either of these? Or both, even? What are your thoughts? Leave me a comment and let me know, I love to hear from you!

REVIEW – BECCA x JACLYN HILL SHIMMERING SKIN PERFECTOR ‘CHAMPAGNE POP’

I did it! I finally managed to get my hands on some ‘Champagne Pop’!!

Unless you’ve been literally living ‘off the grid’ – and I’m not even sure that would keep you in the dark – then you’ve heard of this product. On YouTube, Pinterest, Google, pretty much every blog or magazine out there has reference this product in some way, shape, or form.

This was a collaboration with BECCA Cosmetics by YouTuber and professional makeup artist, Jaclyn Hill. What it is, is the most beautiful, buttery smooth pressed powder highlight I’ve ever felt in my life, and her custom created shade is exactly that; a soft, white-gold with peachy pink undertones, that looks like powdered Cristal in a compact.

While BECCA is available at JC Penny, ULTA, Sephora, and online at www.beccacosmetics.com, this shade in particular is exclusive to Sephora. If you don’t have a Sephora near you, many JC Penny stores now have a Sephora inside them.

Jaclyn Hill is a former MAC Makeup Artist and freelance artist from Tampa, Florida. Starting YouTube approximately three to four years ago with a cheap camera and a desk lamp, she built one of the most successful YouTube careers around. Her quirky, fun, high-energy style and positive outlook on life are what really draw you in, and I’ll admit, she’s not only my favorite YouTube beauty ‘guru’, if you will, but a huge inspiration.

Now that I’ve had my fan-girl moment, let’s talk about the product itself; here’s what BECCA has to say:

What it is:
A creamy powder highlighter that absorbs and reflects light for the ultimate natural glow.

What it does:
Find refined luminosity in any light. This bestselling formula is enriched with ultrafine luminescent pearls that absorb, reflect, and refract light so your natural radiance is never lost. Unlike the traditional pressed powder method which simply mixes and compresses dry ingredients, this unique process blends pigments with proprietary liquid binders, resulting in unparalleled, creamy application with balanced color dispersion. Like a compact full of crushed gemstones, the multi-toned, ultra-fine pigment pearls adjust to your skin’s natural undertones for a truly unique glow.

So without further adieu, let’s get started!

PACKAGING

While most BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfectors come in a black box, this comes in a reflective, gold box with a ‘water droplet’ design, which ties in to the shade name, ‘Champagne Pop’. When you open the box, there is a compact inside, with a silicone-y rubberized finish and domed metal top, with the BECCA name embossed across the top. When you open the actual compact, there is a protective plastic film covering the actual product with again, the BECCA name, and Jaclyn’ signature.

FORMULA

Upon initial swatch, the formula is incredibly buttery smooth, almost creamy, which I attribute to the ‘liquid binders’ as noted above. The difference that I notice between this and my other shades (Pearl & Moonstone) is that this one seems to contain a visible glitter – not chunky by any means, but more prominent than that of the other shades in the line. It’s not enough to deter me from using the product, though. The swatch above is a heavy swatch, but rest assured, it blends out beautifully. Have I led you wrong yet??

 APPLICATION & WEAR

You guys, I was so excited to use this product that I literally put it all over my face when I got it. And then I stepped back and realized that perhaps I’d gone a little overboard.
While it claims to be a universally flattering shade, I find that on my fair NC15 skin, it can easily appear very golden, almost yellow and unflattering, if I’m not careful.
My favorite way to apply this is with a Morphe M501 brush (yes, the same brush that Jaclyn swears by to highlight, and it works!). I dip my brush in the product, and then tap off quite a bit of excess – back in to the compact, of course – I didn’t pay $38 to highlight my floor and my vanity, after all! Then I lightly dust it over my cheekbones, and down the bridge of my nose, and even a little on the tip of my nose. I also like to bring this up around the sides of my eyes, which give an amazingly gorgeous glow when you turn your head in the light.
Because I’m currently ‘printer paper white’, however, I’ve stashed it away to use during the spring and summer, when I’ve acquired a bit more color. But used sparingly I can still make it work, especially if I’m doing a look that calls for a soft, warm glow.

Overall rating : 5/5

If you have the chance to get your hands on this product, I highly, highly recommend it! It’s often out of stock on Sephora’s website, but you can sign up for an email to let you know that it’s available. When I got mine, I was so excited that I actually ordered two by mistake, but returned one – and the only reason that I returned it, is because….wait for it……it’s no longer limited edition!! BECCA has made this a permanent shade in the collection now, so they will be restocking it regularly!

This product retails for $38 and remember guys, it’s exclusive to Sephora. It’s not even carried on the BECCA website (all the other shades are, however). But it’s abso-friggin-lutely worth the money!

Have you guys tried it yet? What are your thoughts?! Leave me a comment below!

REVIEW – BITE BEAUTY SMASHED AGAVE LIP MASK

If you guys have been hanging around here with me for awhile, you know two things (at the very least) – I love a good tinted lip balm, and it’s very much winter here in New England, taking my normally combo/oily skin to the dark, dry side.

So recently I went searching for the ultimate in hydrating lip products, and I came up with this – the Bite Beauty Smashed Agave Lip Mask ($26/Sephora).

Oh. My. God.

Here’s what Bite Beauty has to say about their product:

The leave-on Bite Beauty Smashed Agave Lip Mask imparts a universal red-wine tint while healing and softening lips with its blend of lanolin, vanilla extract, natural olive fruit, and jojoba oil. Its infusion of the powerful antioxidant resveratrol improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, banishes dryness, and lets you achieve irresistible lips.

Bite products are free of polybutenes and petroleum. This lips-only collection is certified gluten-free and made with food-grade ingredients, without sacrificing pigmentation or performance.

Now I know, it’s a pricey item, especially for a lip mask – but if you want to know why I love it so damn much, then just keep reading!

PACKAGING

First things first, let’s start with the packaging. It comes in a little charcoal colored cardboard box, and when you open it up, inside is a similarly charcoal colored tube with the name printed on the front, and a little sliver of color near the cap.

If you’re familiar at all, it reminds me of a tube of hair color, because it’s a squeeze tube (hello hygiene!) and once you twist it open, theres a little piece of foil that you have to poke through using the pointy side of the cap.

FORMULA

You guys, this stuff is THICK! The main ingredient is Lanolin, which is not only incredibly moisturizing but really really thick. And if any of you are moms who happened to nurse your babies, you’re totally familiar with the ingredient and it’s viscosity. But because it’s such a concentrated product, a little goes a long, long way.

I got this in the ‘Smashed’ formula, which is their ‘universal red wine tint’ because you know how I feel about my pale winter lips. There is also an original, un-tinted formula, and a ‘Champagne’ formula, which is a rose gold shimmer. I was interested in neither. Bring on the red!

APPLICATION & WEAR

I’m not even close to joking when I say all you need is an amount the size of a pin head. It comes out (again) super duper thick, and very obviously red, but when applied to the lips, it blends out to a nice sheer red, similar to that of the Nivea Kiss of Care & Color in Sheer Crimson that I’m forever raving about. The only difference is the formula.

I applied this initially before bed one night, albeit cautiously – and I say cautiously because if you’re breakout prone like me, applying a lip product before bed can cause it to run outside of the lip line (a combination of your body heat and rolling around all night), occasionally causing breakouts depending on the ingredients – however, I experienced nothing but pillow soft, hydrated lips when I woke up the next morning, and I could even still feel some of it leftover.

I then tried again as a pre-treatment to a matte liquid lipstick – I applied it (sparingly, this stuff if expensive after all!) before I started doing my makeup, and just gently blotted away any glossiness prior to applying my lipstick. I noticed that because it hydrated so much, my lips actually appeared a little plumper. Not like, Kylie Jenner plump, but enough that I didn’t notice nearly as many fine lines or dry spots that my matte lip colors tend to cling to this time of year.

And of course, you can wear this on it’s own, for a minimal or no-makeup day; the red tint is sheer enough to impart color on your lips, but not so much that you feel like you need a bunch of foundation and winged liner to balance it out (you know what I’m talking about!)

Overall rating : 5/5

You guys, if you’re in the market for a super hydrating lip mask, this is well worth the investment. Save your pennies! I actually have two more coming, just in case.
However, I do believe that it’s something that could be easily recreated at home, too, with the right ingredients. Who knows, maybe I’ll be posting a DIY project soon – if you guys would be into that, or if you’ve tried this, or have another recommendation, leave me a comment below!
