VIVA LAS VEGAS | DAY TO NIGHT MAKEUP TUTORIAL

Hey guys!

So as you may or may not know, from time to time I get some wonderful opportunities to work with awesome companies and create looks for them inspired by various things, which I in turn, share with you all. Well today, I’m participating in a challenge presented to me from Vegas.com, in which I was asked to create a day to night makeup tutorial! Pretty cool, right?

Now personally, I’ve never been to Las Vegas; I’ve never even left the East Coast. But when I think Vegas, I think glitz and glam and drama (not necessarily in a bad way!) and shows and clubs and music and……I could go on and on. But in browsing their amazing hotel package deals page, I found myself immediately drawn to and inspired by one place in particular; The Venetian. There’s just something about warm tones and gold accents that makes this very “Vegas” to me. And it’s good to know that if I ever get the chance to visit, they’ve taken the time to put together a page of some of their best deals and packages for shows, attractions, and more!

So if you want to see my day to night transition, just keep on reading!

DAYTIME MAKEUP LOOK

If nothing else, when I initially think of Vegas, I think hot! I mean, it’s super ridiculously hot there, and although it’s (to my knowledge) dry, desert heat, it’s still hot! So when it’s hot, the last thing I want is a full face of makeup!

All I’ve done for daytime (which is, let’s be real, no different than my usual daytime looks) is fill in my brows with my Salon Perfect Brow Defining Kit, using and angled brush and spoolie, and a mixture of the taupe shade and dark brown shade (taupe for the inner part, dark brown for the tail), and set it in place with my HG Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel. Then, I spot conceal with my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer and a Morphe M173 brush. Since I’m currently very light (for summer), I’m going to set my concealer in place with my Coty Airspun Translucent Loose Powder and an e.l.f. Powder Brush, and then warm up the entire perimeter of the face with the Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer and a Morphe M527. Next I pop on a little Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso, using a Morphe E4, and some Maybelline Lip Studio Color Jolt in Stripped Down.

You may be thinking ‘what about the eyes?’. Lately I’ve noticed that when it’s super hot out, mascara just bothers my eyes, whether it’s waterproof or not. It’s just not comfortable in extreme heat. Besides, if you happen to be sitting poolside at a swanky hotel and decide to cool off in the water, you won’t have to worry about flakes and raccoon eyes when the cabana boy eyes you toweling off!

NIGHTIME MAKEUP LOOK

Ok, so here’s where we punch up the drama a little bit! I’m not one for loud, crowded clubs, but I do enjoy a nice meal, a frozen margarita, and a great show, so of course I want to look my best!

Anytime I’m doing a super dramatic look, I like to start with the eyes; why? Because as you’re working with smokier, darker shadows, or even glitter, you’re bound to have fallout, and it’s easier to wipe it off clean skin than fix my foundation and concealer! I also like to fill in my brows before starting with shadows, because I feel like the structure of the brow helps to guide where my shadow will go, if that makes sense.

I’m going to first prime my brows with some LORAC Behind the Scenes Eyeshadow Primer, which is a great trick if you find your brows tend to fade on you throughout the day or night. Then I’m going to fill them in pretty dramatically with my NYX Micro Brow Pencil in  Brunette. If you want more detailed steps as to how I fill in my brows, you can click here for my blog post, or here for my YouTube video. After my brows are filled in, I’m going to prime my eyes with MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in the shade NW20, and blend that out with a damp beauty blender. I prefer the beauty blender over say, my fingers because I’ve noticed I get a much more even base on my lids, and then while I have the concealer out, I’m going to grab any flat definer brush (I used the Karity E26) to clean up and carve out my brows, making them nice and neat and defined. Then I’ll set the entire area with Coty Airspun Powder and a Real Techniques Setting Brush, to ensure that the shadows I’m using next will blend smoothly.

Now I’m going to grab my Morphe M441 (any long hair blending brush will do) and pick up some Makeup Geek ‘Beaches and Cream’ to use as my transition shade. It’s just slightly darker than my skin tone, and using a shade like this will help any darker shades go on so much more smooth. I’m going to work this all over the crease area, back and forth, blending in circles, making sure there are no harsh lines.
Then I’ll take a Morphe M433 (which is just a smaller, shorter hair blending brush) and picking up some Makeup Geek ‘Cupcake’, start working that into the crease just a little lower than the transition shade. Same motions, back and forth, just keep it a little lower. You want to be careful when you’re working with pink shades, because you can end up looking sick or like you have pink eye if you get too crazy; the next step will help us avoid that!
Next, on a tapered blending brush (I used the Morphe M330), I’m going to pick up some Makeup Geek ‘Frappe’, which is a nice warm, medium toned brown shade that will create a beautiful shadow or contour to the eye. I’m going to focus that more on the outer third of the eye, and once I don’t have as much product on my brush, I’m going to begin to swoop it into the crease, but no further than about the middle of the eyebrow. Then I’ll go back with my M433 and use whatever is left of ‘Cupcake’ on that to blend out any harsh edges (don’t add additional shadow to the brush for this step, just blend!).

Now for the fun part – I’m going to first apply some NYX Glitter Primer to my lid, but only the inner half, and here’s why; I don’t want it all the way to the outer corner because after we apply this next shadow, and then sort of ombre them together, using a matte shadow on a blending brush over a tacky glitter primer will just make your shadow patchy and impossible to blend.
So rather than use my finger, I’m going to use a tiny little flat, synthetic haired eyeshadow brush from ULTA (it came in a ‘gift with purchase’) and apply my primer from the very inner corner, following along my natural crease, and sort of start to feather it across the lid as there is less and less on my brush; so you want the most product on the inner corner, then less and less as you move across the lid.
Then, using a Morphe M167 brush (or any flat packing brush), I’m going to apply L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Amber Rush pretty generously on that inner corner, and lighter towards the center, kind of feathering it out. Once you have every tacky, primered area covered, you can go back with that ‘Frappe’ color we used on the outer corner, and gently blend it together with the ‘Amber Rush’.

I felt like this look called for a pretty dramatic winged liner, so using my absolute favorite Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner in Blackest Black, and a Karity E22 brush, I’m going to create the most perfect, razor sharp wing I think I’ve EVER done on myself in one try! If you want to see a winged liner tutorial, I’ll link that blog post here.

Moving on to the skin, finally! I’m going to start by using two different primers, for two different reasons; I get oily in my t-zone, so for that I love the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. Everywhere else on my face has gotten very dry lately (I blame my turning 30 two days ago!), so to add some luminosity, I’ll use the L’Oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer everywhere else. Once my primer has a chance to sink in, I’m going in with the L’Oreal True Match makeup in N3, and after dotting it all over my face (lightly; you can always add more!), I’m going to begin blending it out with a flat top kabuki, like a Sigma F80, first in stippling motions, then buffing, and then I’ll pounce over everything with a very damp beauty blender to make sure I’m picking up any excess foundation that might make me look cakey.

Now to conceal and highlight, I’m using my absolute HG concealer, the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer in Light Warm, and blending it out with a, you guessed it, damp beauty blender (this thing does it all for me!).
Once my concealer is all blended,  I’m going to use that same damp sponge to pick up my It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Loose powder and bake under the eyes, my chin, my upper lip, and from the center of my forehead, down the bridge of my nose. To set the rest of my foundation, I’ll apply the same powder using an e.l.f. Powder Brush.

After a few minutes, I dust away the excess powder from baking, and grabbing a large angled contour brush from Walgreens (it’s old but it’s amazeballs!) I’m going to apply my Benefit Hoola Bronzer to my forehead, the cheeks, and my jawline and neck, just to bring some color back to my face.
To contour, I’m going to use one of my faves, the NYX HD Blush in Taupe, on a NARS Ita brush, and take that to the hollows of my cheeks, my temples, jawline, and down the sides of my nose.
Still feeling pretty pale, I grabbed my trusty Morphe E4 and my favorite “drugstore” blush, the ULTA Cheek Color in Sunkissed. This even has a little bit of a sheen to it, making it a beautiful color for any occasion, but you know me, I wanna glow to the heavens!
Using Colourpop Super Shock Cheek Highlight in Wisp, which is a beautiful golden shade, I’m going to apply that with my fingers (the best way for this formula, I think!) to the top of my cheekbones, down the center of my nose as well as on the very tip, and my cupids bow.

With my powder and concealer and basically the rest of my face done, it’s time to move onto the lower lash line. Grabbing another (clean) flat definer brush like the Morphe M432, I’m going to pick up some black eyeshadow (I used a Morphe single eyeshadow in the shade Coal), and I’m going to really work that as tight as possible against my lower lash line, and bring it tight into the outer corner to meet that wing. I also want to bring it towards the inner corner (which I rarely do) to get that super squinty, smokey look. Then taking a Morphe M431 (any pencil brush works fine) I’m going to pick up a little more Makeup Geek ‘Frappe’ and use that to smoke out that black shadow. Just run it over the black line that you created on your lower lash line, back and forth; don’t be afraid to really smoke it out – that’s what makes this eye look so dramatic and fun! Then I lined my upper and lower waterline with Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner in Black, and rather than use falsies (because not everyone is comfortable with them) I really loaded on the Maybelline The Falsies Mascara to both my top and bottom lashes, after priming my lashes with Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer.

And finally, since my eyes are so bold, I really wanted to keep a neutral lip, so I lined and filled in my lips with NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Peekaboo Neutral, and then topped it off with Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Creme Brûlée. After a quick blast of your favorite setting spray, you’re ready to take on Vegas!!

MORPHE MONTHLY BRUSH CLUB | JULY 2016

img_9623

Hey guys! It’s that time again!

Time for the unbagging of the Morphe Monthly Brush Club!

If you haven’t read one of these posts before, this is a monthly subscription service, much like an Ipsy or Boxycharm, except instead of getting some sample size cosmetics from brands you may or may not have heard of before, you’re getting at least $30 worth of full size brushes each and every month!
And they’re Morphe brushes, so you know they’re amazing!!
This service is $19.99 a month with free shipping to the US and Canada, and you can sign up yourself at www.liveglam.com – and if you pay a whole year up front, they send you a FREE Morphe 35O Palette – which if you been around on YouTube or the blogosphere or the makeup world in general, you know just how coveted an item that palette is!

So let’s jump in and see what they sent out this month!

MORPHE EE48 (*coming soon*)

EE48

This natural bristle, small tapered powder brush looks to be great for setting under the eyes or even for a super precise contour! I can’t wait to try it out and see how it stacks up to my beloved M438!

MORPHE EE18 (*coming soon*)

Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 10.03.35 AM

EE18

This small, round crease brush looks promising for sure! If you’re someone who prefers smaller brushes for the crease (like me, #hoodedeyeproblems), or even using it to smoke out the lower lash line, you’ll love it!

MORPHE M310 ($4.99)

Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 10.03.42 AM

M310

I have several fan brushes that I’ll be honest, I rarely use. But this is a favorite of Jaclyn Hill recently for applying highlight, so of course, I’ll give this one a go! I really love the M510 for highlighting, which is another natural bristle, goat hair brush, so I can’t wait to try this one too!

MORPHE EE22 (*coming soon*)

Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 10.03.49 AM

EE22

I don’t know about you, but I can never have too many pointed blending brushes! I love how they place the right amount of color and blend it softly and seemlessly every time! We all know if there’s one thing I hate, it’s harsh lines!

MORPHE M432 ($3.99)

Screen Shot 2016-07-01 at 10.03.56 AM

M432

This synthetic flat definer brush is already a part of my collection, but I love it so much already I was just getting ready to order another one! I’m glad I waited! This is perfect for packing color really tightly along your bottom lashes, and some people even like to use it for a cut crease, though I haven’t tried that! It’s also amazing for carving out your brows with concealer since it’s so thin and flat!

By the way, guys, I mentioned last month that Morphe is discontinuing their original Elite Collection, and they’ve reduced the price even further! Everything is now 60% off! Head over to morphebrushes.com to grab them before their gone!

JUNE 2016 FAVORITES

Hey guys! It’s monthly favorites time again!

I’ve pulled a few items that I can’t seem to live without this month, and I thought I’d share them with you!
Let’s get started!

MAC COSMETICS EYESHADOW PRO PALETTE REFILL PAN – NYLON ($6/maccosmetics.com)

I’ve been using this nearly every day (that I apply makeup, anyway) to highlight my brow bone and my inner corners (tear ducts), and I just love it. It’s a very frosty, very pale gold shade that just beams off the skin. I love, love, love this for the spring and summer, when I have more of a tan!

SALON PERFECT PERFECTLY GLAMOROUS FALSE LASHES – #614 ($2.98/Walmart)

These are hands down some of my favorite lashes of all time! I love how long and wispy they are, adding just the right amount of volume and drama to both everyday looks, as well as something a little more glam. They have a super easy, thin and flexible band, which I prefer over a thick band, because I don’t always like to wear eyeliner – with these, you can get them super close to the lash line and barely notice them. And they’re so lightweight, it literally feels like nothing on your eyes!

ALMAY COLOR + CARE LIQUID LIP BALM – ROSY LIPPED ($5.99/ULTA)
NYX SLIM LIP PENCIL – PEEK-A-BOO NATURAL ($3.49/ULTA)

This has been my fave pinky/nude lip combo lately. The liner is basically MLBB (my lips but better), but I like to overdraw them just a bit, and then top it off with this semi-glossy liquid lip balm, which again, is basically my lip color with just a little bit of sheen to it. Super pretty, and super easy! Plus, since lip pencils alone can be a little bit drying, the balm gives enough moisture to make it a comfortable, long lasting combo without breaking down the lip pencil, giving you the dreaded ‘butt-hole lips’.

HOURGLASS VEIL MINERAL PRIMER ($52/Sephora)

I just did a whole review on this primer, so I won’t repeat myself – but seriously, if you’re anywhere from normal to oily-skinned, and want something that keeps your makeup in place, keeps you matte, fills in pores, fine lines, little wrinkles, helps to neutralize redness, and more, go check this stuff out! (Clicking the link will bring you to my review, so click away!)

L’OREAL BROW STYLIST PLUMPER BROW GEL MASCARA – MEDIUM TO DARK ($9.99/ULTA)

A few weeks ago, I noticed that my cleanser (which contains Benzoyl Peroxide) had begun bleaching my eyebrows; fabulous. So rather than reaching for my usual pencil or powder, I remembered I had this product stashed in my brow drawer. On minimal or no-makeup days, I just swipe it over my brows and go; it’s a very neutral dark shade that contains little fibers that stick to my brow hairs, thickening them, and covering up the weird yellow shade they’ve become. For a more sculpted brow, I’ve been outlining them with pencil, filling in the bare spots, and then applying this over the top. Perfect brows, every time.

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS CONTOUR REFILL – SAND ($14/anastasiabeverlyhills.com)

Let’s face it, all the hype surrounding the original contour kit centered around the ‘Banana’ shade – it’s famous, and for good reason. But an often underrated shade in the kit, is that slightly shimmery one at the top right; Sand.
Clearly, it’s not secret that when I highlight, I like to beam rays of shine off satellites, but on days where I just want something a little more subtle (yes, I can do subtle, believe it or not!), I reach for this. It’s got just enough sheen to it to make you look healthy and dewy, without settling into the pores and fine lines on my face. If I really want to amp it up, but still not be ‘over the top’, I mist my face with setting spray, and immediately apply this while my skin is still a little damp. Perfect glow, every time.

MY GO-TO SUMMERTIME GLAM | MAKEUP TUTORIAL

When I sat down yesterday to get ready for the day, I realized I hadn’t done anything really special in awhile, and I had a fresh new pack of lashes to play with, and well, this is what happened!

If you want to see how I created this super easy, long wearing, natural glam look, just keep reading!

After cleansing and moisturizing, I prepped my skin with some aloe vera gel, and went straight for foundation. Mixing the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte 24HR Foundation and the L’Oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer on the back of my hand, I dotted it onto my face and blended with a damp Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. After applying a little of my Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer in ‘Light Neutral’, I again, blended it out with my damp sponge.

Next, grabbing my Kat Von D Shade+Light Contour Palette and a fluffy angled blush brush (mine came from Walgreens on clearance, but I love it!) I used the shade Shadowplay to bronze up my face. Then, with a NARS Ita brush, I very lightly contoured my cheekbones with Subconscious, and used Sombre to contour my nose. I then set my under eye area and t-zone with Lyric, and sharpened up my contour with Lucid, both on a Morphe M438 brush.

Grabbing a Morphe E4, I applied some Milani Baked Blush in ‘Luminoso’ to the apples of my cheeks, and then, because I wasn’t yet visible from outer space, I applied a generous amount of BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in ‘Champagne Pop’ right over the blush, and to the tops of my cheekbones, and a little dab right on the tip of my nose.

I wanted to keep the eyes super simple, so using a Morphe MB23, I applied a little bit of Sombre from the Kat Von D Shade+Light Palette right in the crease of the eye to sort of contour it. Next, I applied a light coat of Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara to my top and bottom lashes, and popped on a pair of Salon Perfect Lashes in 614, which have become my new faves! For my brows, I simply ran through them with some L’Oreal Brow Stylist Plumper in ‘Medium to Dark’.

On to the lips! I lightly overdrew them and filled them in with NYX Slim Lip Pencil in ‘Ever’, and then applied some Gerard Cosmetics Color Your Smile Lip Gloss in ‘Madison Avenue’. Give yourself a bath in the setting spray of your choice (I used Makeup Forever Mist & Fix Setting Spray) and you’re all done!

A LITTLE POP O’ BLUE MAKEUP LOOK

 Hey guys!

When I sat down to get ready this morning, I knew I wanted to incorporate some color into today’s look; I’ve been getting much braver, and you’ll be seeing some bomb-ass colorful tutorials coming soon!

However, it was pouring rain this morning, so I knew that I didn’t want a full face of makeup, or anything that would run horribly if for any reason I got caught out in the rain. But I managed to get a pretty little pop of color going, and the overall look was super simple to achieve!

If you want to know how I got the look, keep on reading!

Starting with freshly cleansed and moisturized skin, I applied some of my Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel as a primer because I’m battling a breakout, (read more about the primer here) and it soothes and hydrated at the same time, while controlling oil too.

Next I applied some Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in the shade Fair to all the areas I would normally highlight; under the eyes, the forehead, nose, chin, and cupids bow. I also put a little bit on my eyelids to even out any discoloration there. Spraying my Sigma F80 with some MUFE Mist & Fix Setting Spray, I blended the concealer out. Then I set everything in place with my It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Silk HD Anti-Aging Micro-Powder and an e.l.f. Powder Brush.

Using an e.l.f. Angled Blush Brush, I applied some NYX HD Blush in Taupe to the hollows of my cheeks, as well as my forehead and the sides of my nose for a nice, light, daytime contour. Using a different angled blush brush (I think this one was from Walgreens) I applied some of the ULTA Cheek Tint in Sweet Cheeks (discontinued, sorry!) to the apples of my cheeks, drawing it up and back towards the hairline; this helps slim the face and give a lifted appearance. Next, I grabbed my Morphe M501 brush (my ride or die for highlighting!) and my Physician’s Formula Mineral Glow Pearls Powder Palette in Beige Pearl, and applied that to the high points of my face – the cheekbones, above the brow, the center of my nose, my cupids bow, and my chin.

For this look I chose to leave the lids themselves bare. To be 100% honest, I was just too lazy today. But I knew I wanted to do something different and fun, so I decided on a pop of blue on the lower lash line. Picking up my Morphe M432 flat definer brush and a Morphe Single Eyeshadow in the shade B.A.M., which is a gorgeous matte, teal shade, I worked that super tight up against my bottom lashes, from outer corner inward to wear my lower lashes start to taper off. Next, I used a Morphe M169 (any pencil brush will do just fine) and the shade Breakfast at Tiffaneez (also by Morphe) to smoke out the first shade. Finally, using a Morphe E36 brush, I highlighted the inner corner with some MAC Nylon, and blended it inward to meet the blue shades. I also picked some Nylon up on a Real Techniques Shading Brush and used it to highlight the brow bone lightly (it’s very frosty after all). Then I applied a couple coats of L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara, and swiped some ULTA Brow Tint in Light through my brows. Finally, a quick application of Gerard Cosmetics Lip Gloss in Madison Avenue, and I’m good to go!

And that’s it! Super simple, but still super cute! This is a great way to get your feet wet if you’re someone who typically sticks to neutrals (like me) but wants to dabble in the more colorful side of things. Baby steps, my loves…baby steps.

SIMPLY SEXY VALENTINE’S DAY MAKEUP

It’s Valentine’s Day! If you’re headed out with your love for a romantic evening, or out with the girls to find a guy for NEXT V-Day, boy do I have a makeup look for you!

Let’s get started!

Before we get started, I’m going to moisturize my lips with some Bite Beauty Smashed Agave Lip Mask ($26), because today I’m using a liquid lipstick, and I want my lips to be as hydrated as possible so the lipstick isn’t too drying, since it is a matte liquid lipstick.

Lately I prefer to start with my eyes, then do the skin – that way, if I have any sort of fallout, I don’t have to worry about it sticking to my foundation and/or concealer. So first and foremost, apply your primer. I’m using LORAC eyeshadow primer (it came with a palette) but you can use whatever you like. Then, apply a little scotch tape to the sides of your eyes – you can read all about that tip by clicking here if you’re unfamiliar.

Once you’re tape is applied evenly to the eyes, take a fluffy blending brush, and apply a light transition shade all over the lid, all the way up to the brow bone – this will ensure that any shadow you put on top of it blends easily, much like we powder on top of foundation before contouring. I’m using the Morphe 35O ($22.99) palette for this look (I’ve gone ahead and number the shadows that I’m using in order of application for you). For my transition shade I’ll be using #1.

Next, I applied a neutral matte brown shade, #2 (third shade in the third row) into the crease with a Morphe M433 ($5.99) brush, and blended it through the crease. Then apply shade #1 to the inner third of the lid, and blend gently towards the outer corner. If it gets too dark, you can always go back with some of that shade we used in the crease and darken it up. Finally, I used shade #3 just to blend out that crease color and add a bit more warmth and dimension.

Now taking a Morphe M160 1/8 ($2.99)angled liner brush, and my Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Liner in Blackest Black ($10), I’m going to use the guideline of the tape to draw on my winged liner. But I want to keep it on the thin side, all across the lash line. For that, I like to lightly stamp my brush along the lash line, to get the thinnest line possible. Now go ahead and remove the tape.

Now let’s move on to the skin. I applied my usual Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer ($11), and let that sink into my skin for a few minutes. Next I’m applying my Revlon ColorStay Whipped Cream Makeup ($15) in the shade Buff, and buffing that into my skin with a Morphe M439 ($14) brush. Then I applied my concealer, the Maybelline Face Studio Master Conceal ($9) in ‘Light’, to the under eye area, and blend it out with a damp beauty blender. I used the same concealer in the shade ‘Fair’ on any blemishes and around the sides of my nose. ‘Light’ works better under my eyes because it’s more yellow in tone, which helps to color correct my dark circles better, while ‘Fair’ is a match to my skin and great for covering blemishes.

To highlight I used the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer ($28) (whew, that’s a mouthful!) in ‘Fair Neutral’. This concealer is so stark white, even on me, that highlighting is really all I can use it for. I applied that a bit under the eyes, the center of the forehead, down the nose, the cupids bow, a bit on my chin, and either side of my mouth, to help with the contouring later. Again, I blend it out with a damp beauty blender – with so much product, I really want to make sure that it’s not cakey and that it looks as natural as possible (even though NOTHING about this look is natural!).

Next I set under the eyes with ‘Lyric’ from the Kat Von D Shade+Light Contour Palette ($46) and a Morphe M438 ($10) brush, as well as anywhere else I applied concealer. Now we can finish off the eyes. Taking any pencil brush, apply a little of your crease shade to the lower lash line, and blend it out. Then I apply a coat of mascara, Rimmel Lash Accelerator ($10) to be precise, to my lashes, because today I’ll be applying falsies. For that entire tutorial, click here, but just to fast forward, I’ll be using the Ardell Demi Wispies ($6) and the DUO Lash Adhesive in the white/clear formula (the link is for a package of two pairs of lashes and a mini adhesive, a great bargain!). Then while they’re drying, I’ll fill in my brows as usual (click here for my brow routine). And once my lash glue is dry, I always like to go back over the band with a little liner, just to make sure it’s as invisible as possible.

For contouring, I’m going to use my NYX HD Blush in ‘Taupe’ ($7), and my NARS ITA brush (I got mine on eBay). I want a nice, softly diffused yet slightly sculpted contour for this look. I’ll also contour my forehead and nose because, well, it just brings it all together for me. For blush, I’m going to use Milani Baked Blush in ‘Luminoso’ ($8) just for a nice peachy glow, and then highlight with theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer ($24) on the tops of the cheekbones, tip of my nose, and cupids bow.

And finally, for the lips – I’m using the Milani Amore Matte Lip Cream in the shade ‘Desire’ (I can’t find a link but I know they were limited edition) which is a gorgeous, blue based red shade. I blot off the lip mask that I applied earlier, and very carefully apply ‘Desire’; I’m not using a liner, I’m just cautiously using the applicator of the lipstick to apply the color and line my lips at the same time. Allow a minute or so for it to dry completely, and then I applied a little bit of L’oreal Colour Riche Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Endless Red ($10) because I felt like the Milani color just wasn’t dark enough. Finally, blast your face with a setting spray like the Urban Decay Chill Makeup Setting Spray ($30), and we’re all done!

That’s it guys! It seems like a lot of steps, but really it took me no time at all! It’s classic, and this look doesn’t have to be reserved strictly to Valentines Day – you can wear this anytime you want!

STROBING TUTORIAL & TIPS FOR OILY SKIN!

Strobing was the latest trend on the red carpet and runways for spring and summer of 2015. It has been said that strobing will replace contouring. Yeah, ok. Personally I’ll ALWAYS contour to some degree, even if it’s just my nose – I have to contour my nose, no matter what.

‘Strobing’ is just a fancy way of saying ‘highlighting’, and highlighting pretty much everywhere. Its basically the absence of contouring. So when one might normally contour, then apply their blush and shimmery highlight shade, you’re simply omitting the ‘contour’ part of the routine.

How many of you breathed a huge sigh of relief that you don’t have to contour?!

This isn’t generally isn’t a routine for the oily-skinned girls like myself, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it! It just requires an additional step, which I’ll share below! So let’s get started!

*OILY TIP – After you’ve cleansed your skin and applied your regular moisturizer, take a stippling brush and a little bit of Milk of Magnesia (see the detailed article here) and lightly apply it to your oiliest areas only – not the entire face! This will be your oil control element AND your primer all in one! Apply your regular foundation or a BB cream over the Milk of Magnesia once it’s completely dry (it will look powdery, don’t wipe that away!) and proceed with the rest of the group!*

STEP ONE

img_9596If you’re NOT cursed (or blessed, depending on how you look at it!) with oily skin, then don’t use the MoM mentioned above – your skin will feel horribly tight and dry all day and you’ll be uncomfortable! Use an illuminating primer like L’oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer ($13), mix that with your favorite foundation or BB cream, and apply it with a foundation brush like the Morphe M439 Deluxe Buffer ($14) or a Real Techniques Expert Face Brush ($9), really buffing it into the skin and blending well. Not only will the primer help you’re makeup last, but it will give you that additional glow factor before you really start packing on the highlight!

STEP TWO

Grab your favorite concealer in a lighter shade, I used my Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer in Ivory ($8), and conceal under the eye in a V shape, the center of the forehead, down the bridge of the nose and along either side of the nose, the center of the chin, and any other imperfections that weren’t covered by your foundation or BB cream, and blend it out with a damp sponge like the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge ($7) – the damp sponge will soak up any excess concealer so you get the flawless coverage, but no ‘cake face’.

STEP THREE

img_9455Taking a liquid or cream highlighter, I used the Revlon PhotoReady Skinlights Face Illuminator in Bare Light ($12), which is a beautiful universal highlight shade, and dot that on the high points of the face; the cheekbones, around the sides of the eye, under the highest point of the brow, the center of the forehead, down the bridge of the nose, the cupids bow, and a little on the chin. I found that after applying, it wasn’t really doing it for me, so I layered a little ‘Pink Light’ over the top of that. Blend that out with your damp sponge again. Now set your under eyes with a brightening powder, I used the e.l.f. High Definition Undereye Setting Powder ($3), or you can use a translucent powder like the Rimmel Stay Matte Translucent Pressed Powder ($4) and a small tapered brush like the Real Techniques Setting Brush ($8). Then set your entire face LIGHTLY with a translucent powder and a big fluffy brush – don’t worry, you’re not undoing all your hard work – just wait for the next step!

STEP FOUR

img_9736Now grab your favorite powder highlight – I’m using theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer ($12 on ebay!)! Taking a brush like the Morphe M501 Pro Pointed Blender ($8)  apply your powder highlight to all the places you applied your liquid highlight. You always want to apply your creams and liquids first, then your powders, so they don’t break apart and look gross. Dust your powder highlight every where you applied the cream highlight, and even apply some to the inner corner of the eye, and a little on the center of the eye lid to really make your peepers pop! Next just apply your favorite blush! I used the Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso ($8) but you can use whatever you love!

All you have left is to finish your makeup like usual, though I would recommend keeping the eyes and lips a little understated – the focus of this look is really on the skin. Some mascara or even a fluttery, fluffy pair of falsies, and a pretty neutral pink glossy lip and you’re good to go! Oh, wait! Don’t forget the brows, of course!

This trend really gained momentum in the spring and summer months, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear it throughout the year! You could pair it with a soft neutral brown-toned eye, or a light berry lip, really anything goes! It’s especially great for those of you with dry skin (like myself right now!) that want to look dewy and fresh and glowing all year round!

I hope you guys picked up a few tips and tricks, or maybe even discovered some products you want to try! Let me know in the comments below if you’ve tried strobing, if you love it or hate it, and what you use to achieve this look!

EBAY HAUL!

When I get in the mood to dip my toes into the high-end side of the beauty pool, I turn to eBay. It’s a great place to find bargains on high end makeup, especially travel sizes for the weary consumer – “do I really need to spend all that money in Sephora? What if I HATE it?”.

Or maybe you’re like me – I get ‘buyer’s remorse’ like crazy, because while I purchase things to review, I also know that the money could have gone to far more important things – so I get on eBay and see if I can catch a deal! So below I’ll get into some of the things I’ve gotten recently, and what I think of them!

Let’s get started!

VINCENT LONGO LIP & CHEEK GEL STAINS

I actually have a full review on these coming up in the next few days – but to paraphrase (which will be hard!) I haven’t been able to stop wearing these since I got them! They retail for $24 each at vincentlongo.com, but I got three of them for $12.99 + free shipping, and a separate one for about $5, also free shipping. They’re a super long wearing, sheer but buildable, water based gel stain that can be used, you guessed it, on both the lips and the cheeks. I’m not super impressed with using them on the cheeks, but on the lips, they’re incredible!

NARS LIP GLOSS IN DOLCE VITA

I picked this up because I had seen all over the place that this was a dupe for the L’Oreal Color Riche Le Gloss in the shade Really Rose. I will say that the formulas are totally different, but the color is pretty much spot on! The NARS lip glosses retail for $26, but I actually won a bid on this for $14.50! If you ask me, that’s quite a deal! When they shipped it however, they sent me a completely different item – a Philosophy Lip Shine in Pink Frosted Animal Cracker – nice and all, but not what I ordered. So upon contacting them, they sent the NARS out right away, and told me to keep the mis-shipped item as an apology – WINNING!

MORPHE M438 POINTED CONTOUR BRUSH

This has been a Jaclyn Hill favorite in the past, used to set the under eye area as well as the t-zone, but when I went looking for it on the Morphe website, it was sold out. On eBay, I found for $9.99. I’m not sure of the regular retail price (it’s not listed on out-of-stock items) but that’s alright – I have a similar brush (the e.l.f. Small Tapered Brush) but it’s a little on the stiff side when it comes to setting my under eyes. This brush is perfect. Super soft, and picks up and distributes just the right amount of product!

NARS ITA KABUKI CONTOUR BRUSH

I’ve actually looked for this before, and then it sort of fluttered out of my mind. I had (yes had) the e.l.f. Studio Contouring Brush, but I think when I washed it I may have gotten water in the ferule, because it started to shed horribly. The NARS Ita brush retails for $55 at Sephora, and I got mine (yes it’s authentic and full size) for about $14 with shipping! WHAT?! Yup!

BECCA SHIMMERING SKIN PERFECTOR PRESSED IN MOONSTONE

I was in ULTA the other day, and wandered on over to the high end side – the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors caught my eye. So I swatched it – OH…MY…GOODNESS….now I see what all the hype is about!! You guys, I can honestly say that I’ve never felt any powder product feel so creamy and buttery in my life! But $38 is a bit steep for a highlighter, at least for me! But I found a full sized one on eBay for $27!! It’s incredible, and by far my new fave!

GERARD COSMETICS LIPSTICK IN 1995

I was so in love with the ‘Color Your Smile Lighted Lip Gloss’ I bought over the summer, so I wanted to try a different lippie. But GC products are crazy pigmented (don’t get me wrong, that’s a great thing!) and I knew I didn’t want to spend money on something that wasn’t wearable for every day. After watching the Kylie Jenner makeup tutorial by Jaclyn Hill (also the creator of this shade of lipstick) I fell head over heels for this product. I found this on eBay for right around $10, and I absolutely love it – it’s matte but not uncomfortable, it looks like my lips but better, and it wears SOOOO long! ❤

It wasn’t a grand haul buy any means, but if you consider the retail prices on everything, and what I actually paid, that’s pretty incredible!

Have you guys used eBay to search for makeup? It’s a great place to find discontinued stuff too!! Leave me a comment below!!

MY FAVORITE DUPES!

I think we all know by now that I’m a sucker for a dupe. I’m a couponer. I’m a bargain hunter. I love sales. I shop clearance like it’s nobody’s business. So when I find a great dupe, you know I have to bring it to you!

But instead of one great dupe, I thought today I would round up several! Let’s get started!

BEAUTYBLENDER vs. REAL TECHNIQUES MIRACLE COMPLEXION SPONGE

The original Beautyblender retails for $20 at Sephora. That’s a lot of money for a sponge that, let’s face it, has to be replaced pretty often no matter how clean you think you’re getting it. They harbor bacteria like nobody’s business. But the Real Techniques sponge is $7 at ULTA, comes in a two-pack for $11, and has both a pointed side and a FLAT edge, making it great for getting up against your lower lash line and right along the sides of your nose when you’re blending out concealer.

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS BROW WIZ vs. NYX MICRO BROW

Let’s be real – Anastasia knows what she’s doing when it comes to brows. The Brow Wiz retails for $21 though – a little rich for my blood. NYX released the Micro Brow pencil, and at $9.99 it’s a STEAL! And to further dupe the dupe, they’re both made in South Korea, and because of the almost identical formula and packaging, I’d venture to guess that they’re made in the same plant! And NYX is almost always running a ‘Buy One Get One 50% off’ sale at ULTA so you can get 2 of them for LESS than the price of one! Save your money for the Anastasia Dip Brow, because I’ve yet to see THAT duped, although Milani has a pretty close formula out now!!

KAT VON D EVERLASTING LIQUID LIPSTICK in LOLITA vs. MILANI AMORE MATTE LIP CREME in BELOVED & NYX LIQUID SUEDE LIPSTICK in SOFTSPOKEN

Here we have a double-dupe! ‘Lolita’ is a gorgeous shade (provided you didn’t get one from the ‘bad batch’) but it’s pricey! $20 at Sephora. But back around late summer/early fall Milani released their limited edition Amore Matte Lip Creme line, and the shade ‘Beloved’ is a fantastic shade dupe for ‘Lolita’! They’ve since been taken off the shelves, but are still available on milanicosmetics.com. NYX also recently released their ‘Liquid Suede’ line, and the shade ‘Softspoken’ is a great dupe as well! Both dry matte, are super long lasting, and most importantly, you don’t get the (forgive me) butt-hole lip look after a few hours of wear!

NARS DOLCE VITA LIP GLOSS vs. L’OREAL COLOR RICHE LE GLOSS in REALLY ROSE

NARS Dolce Vita is said to be the perfect ‘your-lips-but-better’ shade. And it’s absolutely beautiful. It wears well, has great color payoff, and it’s universally flattering. But it’s $26 at Nordstrom. Whoa. I actually grabbed one in an eBay auction recently for $15, but even that was a little steep for me. But why you ask? Because I just had to try it for myself. And I wanted to compare it to a favorite drugstore gloss that I already owned, the L’Oreal Le Gloss in Really Rose. And they’re basically identical! The L’Oreal is by far less sticky, so it doesn’t last more than maybe 2 hours tops. But if you’re looking for a great Dolce Vita dupe and don’t want to shell out $26 bucks, you’ll love the L’Oreal!

URBAN DECAY NAKED SKIN CONCEALER vs.MAYBELLINE FIT ME CONCEALER

I actually did a full review on these products (which you can read here), but the long and short of it is while I loved the consistency, coverage, and application of the UD concealer, I hated that within 10 minutes it had oxidized, leaving me with orange splotches all over my face. Could it have been because it was summer and I was oily? Maybe. But while others live and die by it, it left a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. But Maybelline’s Fit Me concealer is the same consistency, amazing coverage (medium, and buildable) and very long wearing. It doesn’t oxidize on me at all, and because they’re so inexpensive, I like to use these for cream contouring as well!

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR STAY IN PLACE MAKEUP vs. REVLON COLORSTAY LIQUID FOUNDATION

I picked up a sample of this (Estee Lauder) foundation specifically for the purpose of testing this dupe – I already owned and loved the Revlon Colorstay, both the whipped and liquid versions. I actually did a split wear test one day (half Estee Lauder, half Revlon) and found that they performed pretty much identical. They both kept me pretty matte, stayed in place, and didn’t oxidize on me. And I put these to the test on one of the hottest, most humid days of the summer. I was super impressed that Revlon held it’s weight against the Estee Lauder, and while I did like the high end version, if you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg, why would you? I’ll be repurchasing the Revlon over and over and hoping that they don’t discontinue the Colorstay line anywhere in the near future!

MAC LIP PENCIL in WHIRL vs. NYX SLIM LIP PENCIL in MAUVE

Ahhh, the coveted ‘Kylie Jenner’ lip pencil – probably the most sought after lip color in a long time. But really? Over $16 for a lip liner? I can’t. I just can’t. So to find a $3.49 dupe, I was sold. I actually found this one on Pinterest, and ran to ULTA to grab it. NYX makes great lip pencils – they’re creamy, pigmented, and long wearing. If you’re looking to duplicate the ‘Kylie Jenner’ lip, look no further – this is it!

MAC LIP PENCIL in BOLDLY BARE vs. NYX SLIM LIP PENCIL in PEEK-A-BOO NATURAL

Another fantastic dupe – again, creamy and pigmented, super long wearing, this is a go-to on those ‘no makeup makeup’ days. It caught my eye in a Jaclyn Hill video one day and Lord knows I love me a neutral lip! But she used the MAC pencil, so I thought I would take to the internet in search of a dupe, so if you’re looking for a good nude lip pencil but can’t justify (or afford) to pay the MAC price, grab this – you won’t be disappointed!

NARS BLUSH in ORGASM vs. MILANI BAKED BLUSH in LUMINOSO

I think NARS Orgasm was my very first high end beauty purchase – I read about it in a magazine, and had to have it. So I ran to Nordstrom and scooped it up, along with the Orgasm lip gloss. Of course this was back before dupes were everywhere, and I had any real financial responsibilities besides gas money to get to work and back! Now that I’m a mom, my priorities are way different, but I still like to look like a million bucks without actually spending that much – enter Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso. It’s the same universally flattering, peachy-pink sheen, that’s shimmery without being glittery. If there’s anything I hate it’s looking like I’m wearing chunky glitter (except on my eyes – sometimes). Another great option is NYX Powder Blush in Pinched, though that one is a little more pink in tone.

GERARD COSMETICS  LIP GLOSS in ROSE HILL vs.ULTA MINERAL LIP GLOSS in ROSE GARNET

This isn’t necessarily a total dupe in the way of formulation, but more so in color. They’re both a bright, pinky red shade, and very highly pigmented. But the GC gloss is super sticky, helping it last far longer than the ULTA gloss. Additionally the ULTA gloss has the slightest touch of shimmer in it, though it’s not super noticeable on the lips. I picked up the GC on eBay at the end of summer for around $12 with free shipping, which is a steal considering one of these retails for a whopping $24 on the Gerard Cosmetics website. The ULTA gloss was only $8, and they regularly go on sale, so you can stock up!

THE BALM MARY-LOU MANIZER vs. WET N’ WILD COLOR ICON BRONZER in RESERVE YOUR CABANA

I had seen this particular dupe mentioned a lot, both online and on YouTube. I was hesitant to bother trying it because honestly, it didn’t look like much in the way of a highlight – it looked more like a regular pressed powder – nothing terribly special. But after a recommendation from Jessica Braun (jambeauty89 on YouTube) and a sale at my local Walgreens, I decided to try it. And boy am I glad I did! As I said, it doesn’t really look like anything special in the pan, but once it’s on the skin, it just…..does something. It makes you look like you’re naturally glowing from within, like you’ve been eating your fruits and veggies. If you’re looking for a nice, natural, not overly glowy, everyday highlight that’s office or school appropriate, try this product – it really delivers, and for under $5, you get a massive amount of product that will last you a really long time!
