VIVA LAS VEGAS | DAY TO NIGHT MAKEUP TUTORIAL

Hey guys!

So as you may or may not know, from time to time I get some wonderful opportunities to work with awesome companies and create looks for them inspired by various things, which I in turn, share with you all. Well today, I’m participating in a challenge presented to me from Vegas.com, in which I was asked to create a day to night makeup tutorial! Pretty cool, right?

Now personally, I’ve never been to Las Vegas; I’ve never even left the East Coast. But when I think Vegas, I think glitz and glam and drama (not necessarily in a bad way!) and shows and clubs and music and……I could go on and on. But in browsing their amazing hotel package deals page, I found myself immediately drawn to and inspired by one place in particular; The Venetian. There’s just something about warm tones and gold accents that makes this very “Vegas” to me. And it’s good to know that if I ever get the chance to visit, they’ve taken the time to put together a page of some of their best deals and packages for shows, attractions, and more!

So if you want to see my day to night transition, just keep on reading!

DAYTIME MAKEUP LOOK

If nothing else, when I initially think of Vegas, I think hot! I mean, it’s super ridiculously hot there, and although it’s (to my knowledge) dry, desert heat, it’s still hot! So when it’s hot, the last thing I want is a full face of makeup!

All I’ve done for daytime (which is, let’s be real, no different than my usual daytime looks) is fill in my brows with my Salon Perfect Brow Defining Kit, using and angled brush and spoolie, and a mixture of the taupe shade and dark brown shade (taupe for the inner part, dark brown for the tail), and set it in place with my HG Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel. Then, I spot conceal with my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer and a Morphe M173 brush. Since I’m currently very light (for summer), I’m going to set my concealer in place with my Coty Airspun Translucent Loose Powder and an e.l.f. Powder Brush, and then warm up the entire perimeter of the face with the Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer and a Morphe M527. Next I pop on a little Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso, using a Morphe E4, and some Maybelline Lip Studio Color Jolt in Stripped Down.

You may be thinking ‘what about the eyes?’. Lately I’ve noticed that when it’s super hot out, mascara just bothers my eyes, whether it’s waterproof or not. It’s just not comfortable in extreme heat. Besides, if you happen to be sitting poolside at a swanky hotel and decide to cool off in the water, you won’t have to worry about flakes and raccoon eyes when the cabana boy eyes you toweling off!

NIGHTIME MAKEUP LOOK

Ok, so here’s where we punch up the drama a little bit! I’m not one for loud, crowded clubs, but I do enjoy a nice meal, a frozen margarita, and a great show, so of course I want to look my best!

Anytime I’m doing a super dramatic look, I like to start with the eyes; why? Because as you’re working with smokier, darker shadows, or even glitter, you’re bound to have fallout, and it’s easier to wipe it off clean skin than fix my foundation and concealer! I also like to fill in my brows before starting with shadows, because I feel like the structure of the brow helps to guide where my shadow will go, if that makes sense.

I’m going to first prime my brows with some LORAC Behind the Scenes Eyeshadow Primer, which is a great trick if you find your brows tend to fade on you throughout the day or night. Then I’m going to fill them in pretty dramatically with my NYX Micro Brow Pencil in  Brunette. If you want more detailed steps as to how I fill in my brows, you can click here for my blog post, or here for my YouTube video. After my brows are filled in, I’m going to prime my eyes with MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in the shade NW20, and blend that out with a damp beauty blender. I prefer the beauty blender over say, my fingers because I’ve noticed I get a much more even base on my lids, and then while I have the concealer out, I’m going to grab any flat definer brush (I used the Karity E26) to clean up and carve out my brows, making them nice and neat and defined. Then I’ll set the entire area with Coty Airspun Powder and a Real Techniques Setting Brush, to ensure that the shadows I’m using next will blend smoothly.

Now I’m going to grab my Morphe M441 (any long hair blending brush will do) and pick up some Makeup Geek ‘Beaches and Cream’ to use as my transition shade. It’s just slightly darker than my skin tone, and using a shade like this will help any darker shades go on so much more smooth. I’m going to work this all over the crease area, back and forth, blending in circles, making sure there are no harsh lines.
Then I’ll take a Morphe M433 (which is just a smaller, shorter hair blending brush) and picking up some Makeup Geek ‘Cupcake’, start working that into the crease just a little lower than the transition shade. Same motions, back and forth, just keep it a little lower. You want to be careful when you’re working with pink shades, because you can end up looking sick or like you have pink eye if you get too crazy; the next step will help us avoid that!
Next, on a tapered blending brush (I used the Morphe M330), I’m going to pick up some Makeup Geek ‘Frappe’, which is a nice warm, medium toned brown shade that will create a beautiful shadow or contour to the eye. I’m going to focus that more on the outer third of the eye, and once I don’t have as much product on my brush, I’m going to begin to swoop it into the crease, but no further than about the middle of the eyebrow. Then I’ll go back with my M433 and use whatever is left of ‘Cupcake’ on that to blend out any harsh edges (don’t add additional shadow to the brush for this step, just blend!).

Now for the fun part – I’m going to first apply some NYX Glitter Primer to my lid, but only the inner half, and here’s why; I don’t want it all the way to the outer corner because after we apply this next shadow, and then sort of ombre them together, using a matte shadow on a blending brush over a tacky glitter primer will just make your shadow patchy and impossible to blend.
So rather than use my finger, I’m going to use a tiny little flat, synthetic haired eyeshadow brush from ULTA (it came in a ‘gift with purchase’) and apply my primer from the very inner corner, following along my natural crease, and sort of start to feather it across the lid as there is less and less on my brush; so you want the most product on the inner corner, then less and less as you move across the lid.
Then, using a Morphe M167 brush (or any flat packing brush), I’m going to apply L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Amber Rush pretty generously on that inner corner, and lighter towards the center, kind of feathering it out. Once you have every tacky, primered area covered, you can go back with that ‘Frappe’ color we used on the outer corner, and gently blend it together with the ‘Amber Rush’.

I felt like this look called for a pretty dramatic winged liner, so using my absolute favorite Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner in Blackest Black, and a Karity E22 brush, I’m going to create the most perfect, razor sharp wing I think I’ve EVER done on myself in one try! If you want to see a winged liner tutorial, I’ll link that blog post here.

Moving on to the skin, finally! I’m going to start by using two different primers, for two different reasons; I get oily in my t-zone, so for that I love the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. Everywhere else on my face has gotten very dry lately (I blame my turning 30 two days ago!), so to add some luminosity, I’ll use the L’Oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer everywhere else. Once my primer has a chance to sink in, I’m going in with the L’Oreal True Match makeup in N3, and after dotting it all over my face (lightly; you can always add more!), I’m going to begin blending it out with a flat top kabuki, like a Sigma F80, first in stippling motions, then buffing, and then I’ll pounce over everything with a very damp beauty blender to make sure I’m picking up any excess foundation that might make me look cakey.

Now to conceal and highlight, I’m using my absolute HG concealer, the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer in Light Warm, and blending it out with a, you guessed it, damp beauty blender (this thing does it all for me!).
Once my concealer is all blended,  I’m going to use that same damp sponge to pick up my It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Loose powder and bake under the eyes, my chin, my upper lip, and from the center of my forehead, down the bridge of my nose. To set the rest of my foundation, I’ll apply the same powder using an e.l.f. Powder Brush.

After a few minutes, I dust away the excess powder from baking, and grabbing a large angled contour brush from Walgreens (it’s old but it’s amazeballs!) I’m going to apply my Benefit Hoola Bronzer to my forehead, the cheeks, and my jawline and neck, just to bring some color back to my face.
To contour, I’m going to use one of my faves, the NYX HD Blush in Taupe, on a NARS Ita brush, and take that to the hollows of my cheeks, my temples, jawline, and down the sides of my nose.
Still feeling pretty pale, I grabbed my trusty Morphe E4 and my favorite “drugstore” blush, the ULTA Cheek Color in Sunkissed. This even has a little bit of a sheen to it, making it a beautiful color for any occasion, but you know me, I wanna glow to the heavens!
Using Colourpop Super Shock Cheek Highlight in Wisp, which is a beautiful golden shade, I’m going to apply that with my fingers (the best way for this formula, I think!) to the top of my cheekbones, down the center of my nose as well as on the very tip, and my cupids bow.

With my powder and concealer and basically the rest of my face done, it’s time to move onto the lower lash line. Grabbing another (clean) flat definer brush like the Morphe M432, I’m going to pick up some black eyeshadow (I used a Morphe single eyeshadow in the shade Coal), and I’m going to really work that as tight as possible against my lower lash line, and bring it tight into the outer corner to meet that wing. I also want to bring it towards the inner corner (which I rarely do) to get that super squinty, smokey look. Then taking a Morphe M431 (any pencil brush works fine) I’m going to pick up a little more Makeup Geek ‘Frappe’ and use that to smoke out that black shadow. Just run it over the black line that you created on your lower lash line, back and forth; don’t be afraid to really smoke it out – that’s what makes this eye look so dramatic and fun! Then I lined my upper and lower waterline with Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner in Black, and rather than use falsies (because not everyone is comfortable with them) I really loaded on the Maybelline The Falsies Mascara to both my top and bottom lashes, after priming my lashes with Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer.

And finally, since my eyes are so bold, I really wanted to keep a neutral lip, so I lined and filled in my lips with NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Peekaboo Neutral, and then topped it off with Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Creme Brûlée. After a quick blast of your favorite setting spray, you’re ready to take on Vegas!!

MY GO-TO SUMMERTIME GLAM | MAKEUP TUTORIAL

When I sat down yesterday to get ready for the day, I realized I hadn’t done anything really special in awhile, and I had a fresh new pack of lashes to play with, and well, this is what happened!

If you want to see how I created this super easy, long wearing, natural glam look, just keep reading!

After cleansing and moisturizing, I prepped my skin with some aloe vera gel, and went straight for foundation. Mixing the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte 24HR Foundation and the L’Oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer on the back of my hand, I dotted it onto my face and blended with a damp Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. After applying a little of my Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer in ‘Light Neutral’, I again, blended it out with my damp sponge.

Next, grabbing my Kat Von D Shade+Light Contour Palette and a fluffy angled blush brush (mine came from Walgreens on clearance, but I love it!) I used the shade Shadowplay to bronze up my face. Then, with a NARS Ita brush, I very lightly contoured my cheekbones with Subconscious, and used Sombre to contour my nose. I then set my under eye area and t-zone with Lyric, and sharpened up my contour with Lucid, both on a Morphe M438 brush.

Grabbing a Morphe E4, I applied some Milani Baked Blush in ‘Luminoso’ to the apples of my cheeks, and then, because I wasn’t yet visible from outer space, I applied a generous amount of BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in ‘Champagne Pop’ right over the blush, and to the tops of my cheekbones, and a little dab right on the tip of my nose.

I wanted to keep the eyes super simple, so using a Morphe MB23, I applied a little bit of Sombre from the Kat Von D Shade+Light Palette right in the crease of the eye to sort of contour it. Next, I applied a light coat of Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara to my top and bottom lashes, and popped on a pair of Salon Perfect Lashes in 614, which have become my new faves! For my brows, I simply ran through them with some L’Oreal Brow Stylist Plumper in ‘Medium to Dark’.

On to the lips! I lightly overdrew them and filled them in with NYX Slim Lip Pencil in ‘Ever’, and then applied some Gerard Cosmetics Color Your Smile Lip Gloss in ‘Madison Avenue’. Give yourself a bath in the setting spray of your choice (I used Makeup Forever Mist & Fix Setting Spray) and you’re all done!

REVIEW – REAL TECHNIQUES MIRACLE COMPLEXION SPONGE

img_0017If you ask any makeup artist, or even makeup collector, they’ll tell you that as important as good quality makeup is, so are good quality tools.
Now that doesn’t mean that either have to be expensive; quite the contrary, actually.

Let’s be real here – everyone and their mother swears by the Beauty Blender. And it’s a great tool – I actually bought one just for the purpose of finding an affordable dupe (read that post here). There are tons of makeup sponges out there. But my favorite would have to be the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge ($6.99/ULTA).

I actually bought this long before I invested in the Beauty Blender. And I find that still to this day, I reach for this more than the Beauty Blender.

So if you want to see why, keep on reading!

PACKAGING

img_0016This comes in a clear plastic package with the Real Techniques logo printed on the front, and you’re able to see the sponge on the inside. Be careful opening it though; I’ve sliced into my fingers a few times on the sharp plastic. Honestly I wish they would improve that aspect of it.

MATERIAL

This is a bright orange foam. One thing I did notice was that while the Beauty Blender notes on their packaging that their sponge is latex-free, Real Techniques does not; however I can tell you that I have a latex allergy, and I’m able to use this with no issues.

APPLICATION

Just like any other makeup sponge, this works best when damp. But there is a notable difference between this egg-shaped sponge and the multitude of others on the market – this sponge has a flat edge! That is my absolute favorite feature about this particular blending sponge. It makes it perfect for blending out concealer right up along the lower lash line, as well as around the sides of the nose. Of course you still have the pointed tip for blemishes, or even getting up into the inner corner of the eye, but that flat edge! Oh I just love it!

Have you guys tried this sponge yet? What are your thoughts versus the Beauty Blender? Leave me a comment and let me know!

IS IT A DUPE – ORIGINAL BEAUTYBLENDER vs. REAL TECHNIQUES MIRACLE COMPLEXION SPONGE

Ok guys, this is gonna be a fun one! Why you ask? Well, because it’s been said that the Original BeautyBlender can’t be duped. I beg to differ. Anything can be duped, can’t it? Well that’s what we’re gonna see here today!

So, for the purpose of this post, I actually broke down and ordered an Original BeautyBlender – I actually found mine on eBay, for just $12!! Brand new, sealed in the original packaging (c’mon, you guys know I’m a bargain hunter!) – but yes, I specifically went searching for this little hunk of foam so I could do this post – so it better be good!

So let’s get started!

THE ORIGINAL BEAUTYBLENDER ($20 at Sephora)

So we’ll start with the original, of course. The Original BeautyBlender basically looks like your standard egg shaped blending sponge. Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

The original beautyblender® is a revolutionary makeup sponge applicator with 360 degrees of usable surface for creating absolute complexion perfection. This five-time Allure Best of Beauty Award-winner is ergonomically designed to meet your makeup needs. beautyblender® is the first high definition, neon pink sponge application tool that gives you everything from amazingly sheer coverage to a buildable full coverage.

This product is probably the most highly regarded and talked about tool in the makeup industry. Every one has one, or every one wants one. It’s a non-latex foam material, that “features an open cell structure that fills with small amounts of water when wet. This allows the sponge to be “full” so that the makeup product sits on top of the sponge rather than being absorbed, allowing you to use less product every time. When wet, beautyblender doubles in size and becomes even softer, returning to its original size when it air dries.” It’s handmade in the USA. It can be used with cream, liquid, or powder foundation, concealers, setting powders for “baking”, cream blushes, and I’ve even seen people use the mini one on their eyeshadow!

Now like I said, everyone either has or wants one. I was perfectly content with my Real Techniques sponge, but what kind of blogger would I be if I didn’t put products to the test, right? (And maybe a little part of me wanted to see what all the hype was about…maybe.) So here are MY thoughts on the product:

PROS

  • very absorbant and squishy
  • Provides a flawless airbrushed finish
  • Multi-purpose (creams, liquids, powder)
  • Doesn’t absorb all of your product
  • non-latex material (for those of you, like me, with a latex allergy – I wasn’t able to find ingredients for the Real Techniques one but that’s never irritated me so I assume it’s also latex-free)

CONS

  • Expensive – retails for right around $20
  • Not quite as squishy as the Real Techniques sponge
  • No flat edge (which I really enjoy about its RT competitor)

REAL TECHNIQUES MIRACLE COMPLEXION SPONGE ($6.99 at ULTA)

So this product I’ve owned for quite some time. I’ve gone through a few of them actually, and I love them. They even come in a convenient two-pack for $10.99, and are often times on sale at ‘buy one get one 50% off’ at ULTA. That quite the deal! So here’s what Real Techniques says about their product:

It’s a 3-in-1 multi-functional makeup sponge by Real Techniques. The rounded side blends larger areas of the face. The precision tip covers blemishes/imperfections and the flat edge contours around the eyes and the nose, leaving you with a complexion that’s smooth, enhanced and gorgeous!

This sponge claims that it can be used damp for a dewy glow, or dry for full coverage. Personally I don’t like to use sponges dry – since they’re designed to absorb moisture, as well as excess product, when used dry I feel like it absorbs MORE of the product, stealing it from my skin. And if there’s one thing I hate it’s wasting product. I actually tried to use it dry to cover a blemish, and all I got was less concealer on my face and little dots like I sponge painted on my face – not cute.

But one of the things that I do really love about this sponge is the flat edge – I like that I can get right up underneath my bottom lashes with it, and along the sides of my nose. So now let’s talk pros and cons of this little guy:

PROS

  • inexpensive
  • good quality
  • blends out products like a dream
  • multi-functional ; foundation, concealer, blush, baking, powder, cream contour/highlight approved
  • convenient flat side for foolproof blending under the eyes and around the nose

CONS

  • material can break down easily if not cared for gently
  • with daily use and regular cleansing the lifespan is roughly 2.5 to 3 months

So you guys, I would venture to say that……

They both apply makeup flawlessly, they both are multi-functional in that they can be used with different mediums for different purposes from applying to blending to baking and beyond. The only difference in them really is the price, and of course that notable flat edge possessed by the Real Techniques sponge.

I’ll definitely continue to use the Beauty Blender, because I have it. But I just don’t know that I would catch myself spending that much money on it again in the future when the the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is just as good, if not (in my opinion) better!!

Have you guys tried either of these? What are your thoughts? Which is your favorite?? Leave me a comment and let me know!

And please take a moment to go follow me on Twitter and Instagram @dlynnesposito, and go like the Affordable Gorgeous page on Facebook! Your support means the world to me! And of course feel free to share this with your friends!

DECEMBER 2015 FAVORITES

I can’t believe 2015 is over! It’s been a crazy year!

Instead of mourning another year passed, let’s look forward to all the good – all the new makeup that launches in January 2016!

In the meantime though, I’d like to share with you guys all the things I’ve been loving this month. Let’s get started!

MORPHE M501 PRO POINTED BLENDER – $7.99 / morphebrushes.com

I can see why this brush is a favorite among so many – I now get what all the hype is about! It’s become my absolute favorite brush for highlighting!  I have some fan brushes and even a SOHO Pro Crease Brush that is quite fluffy that I used to use for highlighting, and I haven’t touched them since I got this. Morphe brushes are incredible quality and super budget friendly, whether you’re just getting into makeup or you’re a professional! There is of course, and M500 which is a bit bigger, and an M502 which is a bit smaller, but this middle man of a brush just seems to be the perfect size to tackle all of your highlighting needs!

L’OREAL DOUBLE EXTEND BEAUTY TUBES MASCARA – $8.97 / amazon.com

img_9395I noticed the other day that I have a pretty sizable patch of broken lashes in the center of my right eye. Don’t ask me how, but they’re there. So I broke out my trusty L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara – the primer side helps to add length before the mascara side seals it in, creating the illusion of thicker, longer lashes that last all day! Seriously, all day – getting this stuff off can be tricky (and damaging if you’re not careful!) but I use coconut oil, which breaks down the product and nourishes my lashes at the same time.

MILANI BAKED BLUSH IN ‘LUMINOSO’ – $8.98 / amazon.com

I have been reaching for this blush probably more than any other lately. It’s got a universally flattering peachy pink tone, with just the right amount of sheen – not glitter, like some of their other shades (*coughs* Corralina) – it’s like applying your blush and highlight all in one step. It makes you look beautifully healthy and radiant, like you’ve been eating your fruits and veggies. I die.

MORPHE 35N – 35 COLOR MATTE EYESHADOW PALETTE – $19.99 / morphebrushes.com

IMG_8964If you guys are looking for great quality, inexpensive eyeshadows, look no further than the Morphe palettes. If you average out this particular palette, you’re actually paying 57 cents per shadow! You can’t get a deal like that at any drugstore! This palette is entirely matte, with a mix of warm, neutral, and cool tones ranging from lighter skin toned colors all the way to browns and blacks, and even a couple pinks, oranges, and purples. If you want to build your own palette, Morphe also sells individual shadow pans for $2.29, which you can put in a Z palette or even the Morphe brand magnetic palette. I’ll be doing a full review with swatches soon!

MORPHE MONTHLY BRUSH CLUB – $19.99 per month / liveglam.com

img_9428 While we’re showing some love to Morphe, I’m sure many of you saw my recent post about the Morphe Monthly Brush Club – basically the premise is that like any other monthly subscription box – Morphe picks a variety of brushes that value $30+ in total each month, and automatically ships them directly to your door for just $19.99!! Unfortunately it is currently sold out *sad face* but they are accepting people on a wait list! What I absolutely love about this versus other monthly subscriptions boxes is that you know you’re getting full size, quality products that you can use over and over again, rather than a box full of tiny samples and unheard of deluxe samples that you can only use a few times before having to purchase a full sized product. Personally I’m a brush junkie, and already knowing the quality of these brushes made me stalk the website waiting for this deal to drop like a crazy ex-girlfriend! Totally worth it! If you haven’t seen my ‘unboxing’ of the first month, click on over to the HAULS tab at the top of the page and check it out!

L’OREAL MAGIC LUMI LIGHT INFUSING PRIMER – $10.97 / amazon.com

IMG_7448I don’t know what sort of hissy-fit my skin has been having lately, but my ordinarily oily skin has been super duper dry. Like flaky dry. Dull dry. This primer gives such a beautiful luminosity to the skin – however, if you’re oily you may want to avoid this unless you use it under a more mattifying foundation. I love this in the winter because I do tend to lean more on the dry side this time of year, but I hate my skin looking matte. I like to glow!! A trick I like to use is to mix a pump of this primer and a pump of my foundation on the back of my hand like a little cocktail, and then apply it – it shears out the foundation just enough so that you don’t get cake face, while the primer still helps it adhere to the skin.

REAL TECHNIQUES MIRACLE COMPLEXION SPONGE – $6.99 / ULTA

IMG_8951One of the places I’ve been the most dry, oddly enough, is under my eyes. Which has made blending out concealer with my preferred method of the e.l.f. Studio Flawless Concealer brush impossible. So lately I’ve been reaching for my RT sponge, and it’s been a lifesaver. The dampness adds back just enough hydration, and picks up just enough excess concealer (because I can get a little heavy-handed with concealer, I’ll admit it) to blend it out flawlessly. It’s also a great tool if you’ve been struggling with (or afraid to try) cream contouring and highlighting! This is said to be the best dupe around town for the $20 Original Beauty Blender too – don’t worry, mine is coming in the mail soon because naturally, I have to see what all the hype is about, and I will let you know if its an acceptable dupe! I promise!

Well, those are MY favorites for this month, but what are some of yours? Leave me a comment below and let me know, I love to hear from you guys!

And as always, please go follow me on Twitter and Instagram @dlynnesposito, and go give a like to the Affordable Gorgeous page on Facebook!

REVIEW – REVLON COLORSTAY WHIPPED CREME FOUNDATION

My skin is super picky when it comes to foundation. So when I find one I love, and I mean L-O-V-E, I feel like I just have to shout if from the rooftops!

This one in particular is one that I’ve been using for quite some time, on a fairly regular basis, so by now I feel pretty confident in bringing you a review on it. I know, it’s not the latest and greatest product – but by that token, I don’t feel like it gets all the love it truly deserves.

So today we’re gonna show a little (or a lot of) love to the Revlon ColorStay Whipped Creme Foundation!

Out of the entire ColorStay line, I think this is hands down my favorite product. Here’s what Revlon has to say about this product :

Finally, truly decadent makeup offers ultimate performance. The mousse-like texture feels like silk on your skin and the time release formula balances skin for a flawless look. All-day, flexible wear without flaking, caking, or feeling heavy.

• Bouncy, whipped formula flexes with skin for all-day comfort
• Withstands heat and humidity
• Wears for up to 24 hours
• Available in 12 shades

Sounds good to me! So let’s get into the review!

PACKAGING

This is a pretty sturdy, clear glass jar with a black plastic lid. Because it’s pot style, theres no pump or anything (boo for germaphobes like me) so you actually have to scoop product out with your finger or even a little spatula. It feels heavy in the hand, and like it could withstand travel.

FORMULA

This is, as the name states, a whipped creme foundation. Not whipped like mousse-y, like I initially imagined. It feels like a heavy cream. I remember when I first opened it and thought “oh God there’s no WAY I’m gonna like this, it’s just too thick!” but hold on – first, you only need a little bit. A little goes a long way. I would call it medium to buildable coverage, but it’s not heavy at all. It’s actually quite lightweight on the skin, which shocked me. One thing in particular that I love about this foundation is that it’s very neutral in tone (I wear the shade 150 Buff) so I don’t notice ANY oxidization on me, which is rare! Win!

APPLICATION & WEAR

Wearing Revlon ColorStay Whipped Creme Makeup in Buff and a touch of contour

So like I said, this doesn’t have a pump, which I don’t love, but I can deal with. I usually just dip my finger in (clean, of course!) and get maybe half a fingernail sized amount and put it on the back of my hand, and then dot it on my face. From there I blend it out with my Morphe M439 brush, but this is actually one of those foundations that you can use a brush, sponge, or even your fingers and pretty much achieve the same result!

I get what I could probably best describe as a satin finish with this product – not dewey, but not totally matte. As for wear time, this claims to have 24 hour wear – now, I don’t know about you, but I have no designs to EVER wear my makeup for 24 hours! I will say that I get a good 10+ hours of wear, with or without primer (even on my oily skin) and here’s the weird/cool thing about this product – THE LONGER I WEAR IT, THE BETTER IT LOOKS!  No I’m not kidding! I don’t know what they put in this stuff, because usually the longer your foundation is on, it kind of starts to break apart and just look….blah….- this gets more and more natural looking while staying put all day long! And, as a bonus, it doesn’t break me out – and if you’ve been around for awhile here on my blog, you guys know how sensitive my skin is!

I think it’s safe to say that is this my Holy Grail, ride or die foundation!

Now don’t get me wrong, I know it’s a little pricier for a drugstore foundation, retailing for right around $13 depending on where you pick it up – but if you’re looking for a high-end quality foundation without emptying your wallet to the tune of $30 or more, this is a great option. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, drugstore makeup has really stepped up its game in the past few years. I’m really, really, really impressed by this foundation in particular.

Get yours here!

HOW TO – CREAM CONTOUR & HIGHLIGHT

Most people think of highlighting and contouring and think they automatically have to use powder products to achieve the look – not the case!

Today we’ll be using cream products to highlight and contour! And believe it or not, it’s even easier to do, and far more natural looking for every day!

This practice is used to do just as it sounds – it sculpts the face, creates shadows to help conceal or slim some features while bringing light to others, defining them and bringing more attention.

Powder H&C can be a little harsh for daytime – and it requires a pretty decent amount of product to achieve the look which can subsequently feel on the heavier side. Powders also can be less-than-ideal for people with dry skin, and this is because powder can tend to cling to dry patches, making it harder to blend, and appearing dirty and well, patchy!

But creams can be applied lightly, blended easily, and can look incredibly natural if done properly! And depending on the formula of the products you use, this is a great technique for ALL skin types!

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • your favorite concealer, 1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone
  • your favorite concealer, 4-5 shades darker than your skin tone
  • a cream blush
  • a damp makeup sponge
  • a stippling brush
  • a translucent setting powder
  • a powder brush

So without further ado, let’s get started!

*If you choose to wear foundation underneath this, you’ll want to make sure that you have the THINNEST possible layer of foundation on. Or BB cream. Whatever you choose to use. I say thin because in a minute we’ll be adding more cream products, and when you over-apply them, it can start to walk the line between natural looking and cake face. And no one likes cake face. Now, that’s not saying you HAVE to use foundation or BB cream – we will be using concealers for this tutorial, and since they’re basically going all over the face, foundation isn’t really necessary. But I would DEFINITELY recommend using your favorite primer before anything else, so your H&C doesn’t slide around or break down on you during the day. Oh, and if you have any dark circles to color correct, you’ll want to do that now.*

If you look closely you can see the line of dark concealer on my cheek – I know, horrible lighting, I’m so sorry!

First we’ll go in and contour, and for that I’ll be using the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in Deep ($7/ULTA). Starting with the cheeks, it’s pretty much the same idea as powder contouring – start from the top of your ear, and angle downward towards the corner of your mouth, but don’t go any further than the outer corner of your eye. And it’s best to keep the line a little bit higher, because you never want your contour too low – this can drag down all of your features and make you look sallow and droopy. Repeat on the other side.

Next trace the top of your forehead along the hairline with your contour shade, and then on either side, draw a few small lines right above the outer corner of each brow. You can add more or less depending on how large or small your forehead is. If you have a small forehead, add less. If you have a higher forehead and you want to make it look smaller, add a little more.

If you want to add some definition to your chin, you can apply a tiny amount just under the jawline – I typically don’t do this but it’s a great trick to hide a double chin.

And I always, always contour my nose. It’s just personal preference, like the jawline – you don’t have to do this – but if you feel like you have a slightly wider nose, this is a great way to make it look slimmer, and additionally, if you have a less-than-straight nose, it can make it look straighter. If you feel like your nose is long, you can also add some of that contour shade in a V shape to the tip of your nose, making it look shorter.

It’s possible I had entirely too much fun drawing lines of concealer all over my face!

Now we can move on to highlighting! Taking my Maybelline Fit Me concealer in Fair ($7/ULTA), I’m going to apply that to all the places I want to bring light to – under the eyes in a V shape, between the brows, down the center of the nose, the cupids bow, either side of my nose to conceal redness, around the sides of my mouth, the smile lines, and the chin. You can also apply a thin line immediately under the contour line on the cheeks to make sure it stays defined and doesn’t get lost on the sides of the face, or fall too low.

Next we’re gonna take our damp sponge, and I’m using the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge ($7/ULTA), and begin to blend everything out. I like to start with my contour, and blend that out first, and then flip the sponge over and blend out my highlight, that way if the contour looks a little dark, you can blend your highlight over it without dragging your colors together too much and making your face look muddy and dirty. And of course if you feel like you need more, you can add more. It’s always easier to add a little at a time than it is to take it away! Whatever you do make sure you blend away any trace of lines from where we initially applied the product – you want this totally blended, you don’t want to see any harsh lines!

In sticking with the theme of cream products, I’m going to apply a cream blush like Revlon PhotoReady Cream Blush in Charmed ($14/ULTA), and I’m using the e.l.f. Studio Small Stipple Brush ($3/Target) for this, to make it look the most natural.

From here on out I just like to set all my makeup with a translucent powder, and I’ve recently been loving this Mary Kay Translucent Loose Powder ($16/marykay.com) that I got as a hostess gift for throwing a Mary Kay party for a friend, but you can use any translucent powder you have on hand. I just apply that with a Real Techniques Powder Brush ($10/ULTA) to lock everything in place, and then go on to finish the rest of my makeup.

You guys, thank you for bearing with me through my atrocious vanity lighting! I should start coming out to shoot in the hallway where I took the picture above – this is in front of a window with lots of natural light. Additionally, I used no foundation for this tutorial – I wanted you guys to see just how much coverage you could get with just a little bit of product and the right amount of blending!!

You did it! Personally, I love this technique more for everyday – I just think it looks so much more natural. And like I said, if you’re someone with dry skin, you’ll love this because it won’t cling to dry spots, and it won’t feel chalky and uncomfortable. But if you’re someone with oily skin, that’s fine too – just use long wearing concealers or even different shades of foundation (Revlon Colorstay Foundations would work great here!) to achieve this look!

I hope you guys picked up some useful tips and tricks from this tutorial! Leave me comments below and let me know if you’ve tried cream highlighting and contouring and what your favorite products are! I love to hear from you guys!

MAKEUP FOR GLASSES

As long as I’ve been wearing makeup, I’ve also been wearing glasses.

Two main problems I’ve had when it comes to makeup and glasses, are defining my eyes enough to compete with my thicker, dark frames, and preventing that telltale ‘dent’ in my foundation from where they rest on the bridge of my nose. And I know I can’t be the only one who suffers. I know there are more of us out there!

Contacts never really appealed to me – I’ve always hated the thought of sticking my finger in my eye. Remember that episode of ‘Friends’ where Rachel has to go to the eye doctor and just FREAKS OUT? Yeah, that’s me.

But recently, I’ve realized that since I can’t wear my sunglasses over my regular glasses to drive, and I’ve yet to find an affordable pair of Rx sunnies that I love, it may be time to bite the bullet. But in the meantime, I wanted to do a look that would make me (and hopefully you, too!) feel confident and pretty when I wear my glasses! So let’s get started!

STEP 1 – PRIMER, FOUNDATION, & CONCEALER

One of the most important ways to avoid that smudgey, dented foundation look is to apply a good primer. If you’re like me and you get oily, oil-free and matte products will be your best friends. I like to use the Rimmel Stay Matte Primer ($7) all over, but especially concentrated on the center of my forehead, down my nose, along the sides, and my chin, otherwise I’m an oily monster.

Then using a matte foundation like the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation ($13) and a damp sponge, blend a thin layer over your skin, taking time to really press it into the skin. The sponge will ensure that you don’t have too much product on, because too much will cause that slipping and smudging.

Next, apply your favorite concealer, you guys know mine is the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer ($7) to your undereye area, on the lids, in the inner corner, and bring it down in a V shape under the eyes. This will brighten up the eye area if you have dark frames. If you plan to highlight with your concealer, nows the time! And finally, set the entire face, lids included, to prevent creasing and shine.

STEP 2 – EYES

Now let’s draw attention to those big, beautiful peepers! I personally feel like because my frames are on the thicker side, and the lens is a more narrow, rectangular shape, dark eye makeup just doesn’t work. But that’s just me. If you have bigger lenses, you may want to darken the eye so they don’t get lost behind your glasses.

I like to take a light, barely there matte shadow like the one just to the left of that bright white shade above, and dust it all over the eye, from lid to brow, with a fluffy blending brush.

Then I like to pop a medium, neutral brown shade (bottom row of the above palette, 2nd shade in from the left) into the crease, really focusing on the outer corners, and then slowly blending upward so there’s no harsh lines. A great palette for a look like this is the Maybelline The Nudes Eyeshadow Palette ($10).

Then I like to grab a little bit of highlighter, like the Hard Candy Baked Bronzer in Tiki ($9), and dust that on the lid, inner corner, and just under the highest point of the brow. This really helps to open up the eyes and make them look big and bright and awake.

Next, grab a gel liner like Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner in Blackest Black ($8) and a small angled brush and make a very thin line as close as you can to your upper lashes. When you get to the outer corner you can make it just a tad thicker if you like, or even wing it out ever so slightly.

Before finishing my eyes, I realized I hadn’t done my brows! Do whatever you’re most comfortable! I just penciled mine in and brushed through with a clean spoolie. Then taking a black kohl pencil, a good one is Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Liner in Black ($4), work it between the bottom lashes, but only on the outer third of your eye. Get a flat definer brush and some of that medium brown shadow you used in the crease, and use that to lightly smudge out that black liner on the lower lash line. Don’t bring it too far into the inner corner however – keep it on the outer third to keep your eyes looking big and awake – basically you want the outer corners dark and the inner corners light.

Next curl your lashes (this will help open up the eyes and keep your lashes from touching your lenses and smudging your mascara on them!) and apply some mascara on your top and bottom lashes, like Maybelline The Falsies Mascara ($6), and you’re good to go!

From here on out, all you really need to do is throw on a little blush and/or bronzer, and a lip color and you’re good to go! With such a defined eye, I usually keep my lips as natural looking as possible, with a tinted lip balm or a natural lip stick or stain, I like the L’oreal Colour Riche Caresse Wet Shine Stain ($10) in Eternally Nude.

Guys, I really apologize for the terrible lighting! My vanity doesn’t have the best light, and I typically do these very very early in the morning while my son sleeps so I have minimal light to work with in general – thank you for bearing with me! I hope that you get the basic idea!

MY FAVORITE DUPES!

I think we all know by now that I’m a sucker for a dupe. I’m a couponer. I’m a bargain hunter. I love sales. I shop clearance like it’s nobody’s business. So when I find a great dupe, you know I have to bring it to you!

But instead of one great dupe, I thought today I would round up several! Let’s get started!

BEAUTYBLENDER vs. REAL TECHNIQUES MIRACLE COMPLEXION SPONGE

The original Beautyblender retails for $20 at Sephora. That’s a lot of money for a sponge that, let’s face it, has to be replaced pretty often no matter how clean you think you’re getting it. They harbor bacteria like nobody’s business. But the Real Techniques sponge is $7 at ULTA, comes in a two-pack for $11, and has both a pointed side and a FLAT edge, making it great for getting up against your lower lash line and right along the sides of your nose when you’re blending out concealer.

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS BROW WIZ vs. NYX MICRO BROW

Let’s be real – Anastasia knows what she’s doing when it comes to brows. The Brow Wiz retails for $21 though – a little rich for my blood. NYX released the Micro Brow pencil, and at $9.99 it’s a STEAL! And to further dupe the dupe, they’re both made in South Korea, and because of the almost identical formula and packaging, I’d venture to guess that they’re made in the same plant! And NYX is almost always running a ‘Buy One Get One 50% off’ sale at ULTA so you can get 2 of them for LESS than the price of one! Save your money for the Anastasia Dip Brow, because I’ve yet to see THAT duped, although Milani has a pretty close formula out now!!

KAT VON D EVERLASTING LIQUID LIPSTICK in LOLITA vs. MILANI AMORE MATTE LIP CREME in BELOVED & NYX LIQUID SUEDE LIPSTICK in SOFTSPOKEN

Here we have a double-dupe! ‘Lolita’ is a gorgeous shade (provided you didn’t get one from the ‘bad batch’) but it’s pricey! $20 at Sephora. But back around late summer/early fall Milani released their limited edition Amore Matte Lip Creme line, and the shade ‘Beloved’ is a fantastic shade dupe for ‘Lolita’! They’ve since been taken off the shelves, but are still available on milanicosmetics.com. NYX also recently released their ‘Liquid Suede’ line, and the shade ‘Softspoken’ is a great dupe as well! Both dry matte, are super long lasting, and most importantly, you don’t get the (forgive me) butt-hole lip look after a few hours of wear!

NARS DOLCE VITA LIP GLOSS vs. L’OREAL COLOR RICHE LE GLOSS in REALLY ROSE

NARS Dolce Vita is said to be the perfect ‘your-lips-but-better’ shade. And it’s absolutely beautiful. It wears well, has great color payoff, and it’s universally flattering. But it’s $26 at Nordstrom. Whoa. I actually grabbed one in an eBay auction recently for $15, but even that was a little steep for me. But why you ask? Because I just had to try it for myself. And I wanted to compare it to a favorite drugstore gloss that I already owned, the L’Oreal Le Gloss in Really Rose. And they’re basically identical! The L’Oreal is by far less sticky, so it doesn’t last more than maybe 2 hours tops. But if you’re looking for a great Dolce Vita dupe and don’t want to shell out $26 bucks, you’ll love the L’Oreal!

URBAN DECAY NAKED SKIN CONCEALER vs.MAYBELLINE FIT ME CONCEALER

I actually did a full review on these products (which you can read here), but the long and short of it is while I loved the consistency, coverage, and application of the UD concealer, I hated that within 10 minutes it had oxidized, leaving me with orange splotches all over my face. Could it have been because it was summer and I was oily? Maybe. But while others live and die by it, it left a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. But Maybelline’s Fit Me concealer is the same consistency, amazing coverage (medium, and buildable) and very long wearing. It doesn’t oxidize on me at all, and because they’re so inexpensive, I like to use these for cream contouring as well!

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR STAY IN PLACE MAKEUP vs. REVLON COLORSTAY LIQUID FOUNDATION

I picked up a sample of this (Estee Lauder) foundation specifically for the purpose of testing this dupe – I already owned and loved the Revlon Colorstay, both the whipped and liquid versions. I actually did a split wear test one day (half Estee Lauder, half Revlon) and found that they performed pretty much identical. They both kept me pretty matte, stayed in place, and didn’t oxidize on me. And I put these to the test on one of the hottest, most humid days of the summer. I was super impressed that Revlon held it’s weight against the Estee Lauder, and while I did like the high end version, if you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg, why would you? I’ll be repurchasing the Revlon over and over and hoping that they don’t discontinue the Colorstay line anywhere in the near future!

MAC LIP PENCIL in WHIRL vs. NYX SLIM LIP PENCIL in MAUVE

Ahhh, the coveted ‘Kylie Jenner’ lip pencil – probably the most sought after lip color in a long time. But really? Over $16 for a lip liner? I can’t. I just can’t. So to find a $3.49 dupe, I was sold. I actually found this one on Pinterest, and ran to ULTA to grab it. NYX makes great lip pencils – they’re creamy, pigmented, and long wearing. If you’re looking to duplicate the ‘Kylie Jenner’ lip, look no further – this is it!

MAC LIP PENCIL in BOLDLY BARE vs. NYX SLIM LIP PENCIL in PEEK-A-BOO NATURAL

Another fantastic dupe – again, creamy and pigmented, super long wearing, this is a go-to on those ‘no makeup makeup’ days. It caught my eye in a Jaclyn Hill video one day and Lord knows I love me a neutral lip! But she used the MAC pencil, so I thought I would take to the internet in search of a dupe, so if you’re looking for a good nude lip pencil but can’t justify (or afford) to pay the MAC price, grab this – you won’t be disappointed!

NARS BLUSH in ORGASM vs. MILANI BAKED BLUSH in LUMINOSO

I think NARS Orgasm was my very first high end beauty purchase – I read about it in a magazine, and had to have it. So I ran to Nordstrom and scooped it up, along with the Orgasm lip gloss. Of course this was back before dupes were everywhere, and I had any real financial responsibilities besides gas money to get to work and back! Now that I’m a mom, my priorities are way different, but I still like to look like a million bucks without actually spending that much – enter Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso. It’s the same universally flattering, peachy-pink sheen, that’s shimmery without being glittery. If there’s anything I hate it’s looking like I’m wearing chunky glitter (except on my eyes – sometimes). Another great option is NYX Powder Blush in Pinched, though that one is a little more pink in tone.

GERARD COSMETICS  LIP GLOSS in ROSE HILL vs.ULTA MINERAL LIP GLOSS in ROSE GARNET

This isn’t necessarily a total dupe in the way of formulation, but more so in color. They’re both a bright, pinky red shade, and very highly pigmented. But the GC gloss is super sticky, helping it last far longer than the ULTA gloss. Additionally the ULTA gloss has the slightest touch of shimmer in it, though it’s not super noticeable on the lips. I picked up the GC on eBay at the end of summer for around $12 with free shipping, which is a steal considering one of these retails for a whopping $24 on the Gerard Cosmetics website. The ULTA gloss was only $8, and they regularly go on sale, so you can stock up!

THE BALM MARY-LOU MANIZER vs. WET N’ WILD COLOR ICON BRONZER in RESERVE YOUR CABANA

I had seen this particular dupe mentioned a lot, both online and on YouTube. I was hesitant to bother trying it because honestly, it didn’t look like much in the way of a highlight – it looked more like a regular pressed powder – nothing terribly special. But after a recommendation from Jessica Braun (jambeauty89 on YouTube) and a sale at my local Walgreens, I decided to try it. And boy am I glad I did! As I said, it doesn’t really look like anything special in the pan, but once it’s on the skin, it just…..does something. It makes you look like you’re naturally glowing from within, like you’ve been eating your fruits and veggies. If you’re looking for a nice, natural, not overly glowy, everyday highlight that’s office or school appropriate, try this product – it really delivers, and for under $5, you get a massive amount of product that will last you a really long time!
